Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the system both uses the Module Manager and loads module images through txm_module_manager_in_place_load(), txm_module_manager_memory_load(), txm_module_manager_absolute_load(), txm_module_manager_absolute_load_extended(), or txm_module_manager_file_load(); deployments that do not use the Module Manager are unaffected. The attacker must control a module image the device loads and set its preamble data size, start/stop stack size, or callback stack size close to ULONG maximum so the allocation arithmetic overflows. The CVSS vector shows PR:L, indicating authenticated/privileged ability to supply that module (authentication required per PR:L), with no user interaction (UI:N) and a local vector (AV:L). Impact is limited to denial of further Module Manager operations until system reset; confidentiality and integrity are unaffected.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded availability issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) describes a local, low-complexity attack requiring some privilege (PR:L), with impact confined entirely to availability of the vulnerable system (VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) and no scope change - consistent with a CWE-667/CWE-833 locking/deadlock defect rather than memory corruption. The vendor advisory confirms 'nothing is read or written out of bounds,' so despite the 'Buffer Overflow' tag this is not a code-execution or data-disclosure bug. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is not in CISA KEV, and no working exploit code is referenced (only the GHSA advisory and an Eclipse GitLab work item), so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month,' aligning with the Medium (6.8) severity and the local, privilege-requiring vector - a real priority to patch on a normal cadence rather than an act-now/emergency item. The limiting factor is exposure: only deployments that use the Module Manager and load externally-supplied module images are at risk, and the attacker must already control a module the device loads.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can supply or tamper with a loadable module image sets the preamble's data size or stack size near the maximum of a ULONG. When the device loads that image, the Module Manager detects the arithmetic overflow and returns an error without releasing its protection mutex, so every subsequent load/start/stop/unload from any other thread blocks forever until the system is reset. No public working exploit code is identified at time of analysis; local, low-complexity access to module input is required.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

Eclipse ThreadX 6.0.1 through 6.5.2.202603 can be left with its Module Manager permanently deadlocked: when a module preamble declares a data size or a start/stop/callback stack size that overflows the allocation arithmetic, the loaders return TXM_MODULE_MATH_OVERFLOW without releasing the Module Manager mutex, so every later module load, start, stop or unload from any other thread blocks until the system is reset. Affected are systems that actually use the Module Manager and load images through txm_module_manager_in_place_load(), txm_module_manager_memory_load(), txm_module_manager_absolute_load(), txm_module_manager_absolute_load_extended() or txm_module_manager_file_load(); the vector is local with PR:L (CVSS-B 6.8), so the actor must be able to supply a crafted module image. Impact is availability-only - no out-of-bounds read or write occurs and confidentiality and integrity are unaffected - and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; the vendor released a fix in 6.5.2.202603b.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Eclipse ThreadX 6.5.2.202603b, which is the version the vendor advisory names as fixed: the overflow branches in _txm_module_manager_internal_load() and _txm_module_manager_absolute_load_extended() now release the Module Manager mutex before returning, and the loaders validate the preamble's sizes before computing the allocation; a new regression test asserts that every refused load leaves the mutex free and fails without the fix. Consult https://github.com/eclipse-threadx/threadx/security/advisories/GHSA-67ww-q8x2-g487 for the advisory text and https://gitlab.eclipse.org/security/cve-assignment/-/work_items/511 for the assignment record. No interim workaround is documented; because the trigger is attacker-controlled preamble content, deployments that cannot patch immediately should restrict who is permitted to supply module images loaded by the device and pre-validate the preamble data size, start/stop stack size and callback stack size (rejecting values close to the ULONG maximum) before calling any of the loaders - noting that these checks are compensating controls rather than the vendor fix, and that once a load has been refused the manager stays deadlocked and the only recovery is a system reset.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw sits in the Eclipse ThreadX Module Manager, the component that loads, relocates, starts, stops and unloads protected module images on top of the RTOS. Both _txm_module_manager_internal_load() (reached through txm_module_manager_in_place_load(), txm_module_manager_memory_load() and, after the file is read, txm_module_manager_file_load()) and _txm_module_manager_absolute_load_extended() (used by both absolute loaders) acquire _txm_module_manager_mutex and then sum the preamble's data size, start/stop stack size and callback stack size using TXM_MODULE_MANAGER_UTIL_MATH_ADD_ULONG. That helper detects unsigned overflow and makes the enclosing function return TXM_MODULE_MATH_OVERFLOW directly; unlike every other error path in these functions, this branch never releases the mutex. The calling thread returns still owning the lock, so any other thread that subsequently requests it waits forever - the classic improper-locking / deadlock pairing captured by CWE-667 and CWE-833. Values near the ULONG maximum in the preamble's size fields are the trigger, and because the trigger is a field of the module image itself, the relevant threat actor is whoever controls a module the device loads. The CPE entry is a wildcard for eclipse_foundation:eclipse_threadx, covering the 6.0.1-6.5.2.202603 range across all module ports; the trigger mechanics beyond the size fields are as described in the vendor advisory, and no memory-safety corruption is involved.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Eclipse ThreadX versions 6.0.1 through 6.5.2.202603, the Module Manager loaders return an overflow error without releasing the Module Manager mutex when a module preamble declares a data or stack size that overflows the allocation arithmetic. Loading such an image blocks every later module load, start, stop and unload from other threads until the system is reset.
