MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to upload an SVG file to the application (PR:L - a low-privileged authenticated uploader in typical deployments) and, for the CSS-injection and host-page data-exfiltration vectors, the SVG must be rendered INLINE in the DOM - the advisory explicitly states these do not apply when the SVG is loaded via . A victim must then view the page that renders the SVG (UI:P). The
tracking-pixel and unquoted url() vectors specifically bypass the removeRemoteReferences(true) option, so they work even when that defense is enabled. Limiting factors: no code execution results (data:text/html is blocked by isHrefSafeValue(), so the polyglot path needs additional crafting plus the victim opening the saved file); impact is confined to confidentiality/tracking; and the highest-value attribute-exfiltration selectors only work where the SVG is inlined into a sensitive page. Affected versions are svg-sanitize < 1.0.0 (vulnerable through 0.22.0); updating to 1.0.0 is the vendor fix. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.1 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P: network-reachable and low-complexity, but it requires low-privilege access (PR:L - i.e., the ability to upload an SVG) and passive user interaction (UI:P - a victim must view the rendered page). Impact is limited to confidentiality (VC:L) with no integrity or availability effect, consistent with the described outcomes: CSS-based data exfiltration, user tracking, and visitor IP disclosure rather than code execution. It is NOT in CISA KEV (no KEV signal in the input), so there is no confirmed active exploitation; the GHSA advisory does contain detailed proof-of-concept SVG payloads, so a public PoC reference exists, though it is not verified as working end-to-end exploit code in a specific product. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from this data. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), aligning with the medium severity and absence of active exploitation. The main driver of real-world relevance is reach, not severity: svg-sanitize is extremely widely deployed (45.2M Packagist downloads, 90+ dependents, 1M+ WordPress Safe SVG installs, plus TYPO3 and Drupal), so even a medium-severity logic flaw has a large aggregate footprint. Note a vector discrepancy to verify: the GHSA advisory proposes CVSS 3.1 4.3 with UI:N, whereas the input CVSS 4.0 vector uses UI:P (interaction required); the CSS-injection vectors realistically need a victim to view an inline-rendered SVG, so UI:P is the more defensible choice. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with a normal upload-capable account on a site using svg-sanitize uploads an SVG containing a block with @import/url() or an
pointing at attacker infrastructure. When a victim or admin views a page that renders the SVG inline, the browser fetches the external resources, leaking the visitor's IP, enabling tracking, and - via CSS attribute selectors - exfiltrating host-page data character-by-character. Detailed PoC payloads for all vectors are published in the GHSA advisory, though they are not verified as a packaged working exploit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
CSS injection and remote-reference filtering bypasses in enshrined/svg-sanitize before 1.0.0 let an attacker who can upload SVG files embed external stylesheets, tracking pixels and unquoted url() references that survive sanitization. The library never inspects the text content of elements, its removeRemoteReferences option only matches quoted url('...') patterns in attributes, and bare href attributes on
are not checked at all, so a low-privileged uploader can exfiltrate host-page attribute data via CSS selectors or disclose visitor IP addresses and browsing activity. Impact is limited to confidentiality and tracking rather than code execution, and the CSS-selector data-exfiltration path only applies where the sanitized SVG is rendered inline in the DOM, not when loaded through . Proof-of-concept payloads are documented in the upstream advisory; no confirmed exploitation in the wild is reported, and the vendor fix is version 1.0.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade enshrined/svg-sanitize to 1.0.0, the vendor-released fixed version; the package metadata lists fixed in 1.0.0 for the vulnerable range <= 0.22.0, and updating is the only complete fix because the bypasses are inherent to the sanitizer's logic (see https://github.com/darylldoyle/svg-sanitizer/security/advisories/GHSA-qhmf-972w-m957). Where the upgrade cannot be applied immediately, the upstream advisory's suggested code changes indicate the shape of effective compensating controls: strip or sanitize the text content of elements before output, broaden the hasRemoteReference() regular expression to accept unquoted url() values and add a check for bare http(s) href/src attributes, and remove the download attribute from the allowed-attribute whitelist. Deployment-side controls help but have clear trade-offs: rendering user-supplied SVGs only via rather than inlining them removes the CSS-selector data-exfiltration and @import vectors, though it does not stop the
tracking pixel or unquoted url() fetches; a Content-Security-Policy restricting img-src and style-src to trusted origins blocks the outbound requests that carry the exfiltration, at the cost of breaking legitimate remote assets; and restricting SVG upload privileges to trusted users reduces exposure but does not eliminate it, since the issue is reachable by any low-privileged uploader. Note that removeRemoteReferences(true) is explicitly bypassable and should not be relied upon as a mitigation on its own.

Technical ContextAI · show details
enshrined/svg-sanitize is a widely used PHP SVG filtering library (roughly 45 million Packagist downloads and more than 90 dependents, including the WordPress Safe SVG plugin with over a million active installs and downstream use in TYPO3 and Drupal ecosystems). It walks the DOM and enforces whitelists of allowed tags, attributes and attribute values, but the checks are syntactic rather than semantic, and the advisory groups the gaps under CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation, i.e. cross-site scripting class). Three distinct weaknesses are described: is on the allowed-tag list yet the element's text content is never sanitized, so @import and url() rules pass through untouched; the hasRemoteReference() helper uses the regular expression ~^url\(\s*[\'"]\s*(.*)\s*[\'"]\s*\)$~xi, which requires the URL to be wrapped in quotes, so unquoted url(https://...) values in attributes such as fill evade the removeRemoteReferences(true) option entirely; and that same helper is only consulted for values matching the url() pattern, so a bare href on an
element pointing at a remote URL is preserved even with the option enabled. A fourth vector concerns the allowed download attribute on , which combined with a data: URI can prompt a file download under an attacker-chosen name; the advisory notes that data:text/html is rejected by isHrefSafeValue(), so this path needs a polyglot or a data:image/svg+xml payload plus the victim opening the saved file, and it does not yield code execution on the host origin by itself. All of these are logic and design flaws in the sanitizer, independent of any PHP DOM extension bug, and they reproduce on all PHP versions.

darylldoyle svg-sanitizer before 1.0.0 contains CSS injection and remote reference bypass vulnerabilities that allow attackers to embed external resources by uploading crafted SVG files. Attackers can use unsanitized style content, unquoted url() values, or image href attributes to exfiltrate page data, track users, or disclose visitor IP addresses.
