Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated REDAXO backend user who has media permission for at least one category, plus at least one file existing in another (restricted) media category. No crafted request or victim interaction is needed: because media permissions are flat and a search - especially searchmode=global - lists files outside the user's permitted categories, those files appear as selectable checkboxes, so entering a search term, ticking a foreign file and pressing move is enough. CSRF protection does not help because the attacker is the legitimately logged-in user. Limiting factors beyond the raw score: backend authentication is mandatory (PR:L), and the resulting file replacement is constrained - the new file's extension must match the original (or jpg/jpeg), the MIME allowlist applies, and SVGs are sanitised; deletion of in-use files is refused outright.

Impact

Signals are consistent and point to a moderate, integrity-focused priority rather than an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) shows a network-reachable backend flaw with low complexity but requiring an authenticated backend user (PR:L), so this is not an unauthenticated internet-facing bug. Impact is skewed to integrity (VI:H) with only low confidentiality (VC:L) and no availability impact, matching the advisory's point that media confidentiality is already weak by design and that deletion is blocked for in-use files. CISA KEV status is NO and SSVC reports Exploitation: none, Automatable: no, Technical Impact: partial - so there is no active-exploitation signal and the issue is not mass-automatable (it requires an existing authenticated session and some interaction). No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be compared here. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', which aligns with a real but non-emergency priority: patch within the normal weekly cycle. This is a genuine privilege/authorization weakness, not an inflated high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk issue, but its need for valid backend credentials and the constraints on file replacement (extension match, MIME allowlist, SVG sanitisation) bound the real-world blast radius.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated REDAXO backend user who holds media permission for just one category runs a search (notably with searchmode=global), which surfaces files from categories they are not authorised for as selectable. They tick a restricted file, bulk-move it into their own category - which only checks the target category permission - and then use the media detail 'replace file' function to silently overwrite a logo, PDF or download embedded across the whole site. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the advisory confirms no crafted request is needed: searching, ticking and pressing move is sufficient.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Missing authorization in REDAXO's media pool bulk move (core releases through 5.21.3) lets authenticated backend users with permission for just one media category pull files out of categories they are barred from and then silently replace their contents everywhere those files are embedded. The bulk move validates only the target category, and because media permissions are flat while search (notably searchmode=global) lists files outside permitted categories as selectable checkboxes, no crafted request or victim interaction is required. Integrity impact dominates: replacement is constrained by matching file extensions, a MIME allowlist and SVG sanitisation, and deletion of in-use files is refused. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV), and vendor patches are available in 5.21.4, making this a this-week priority rather than an emergency.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 5.21.4 - upgrade redaxo/core (or composer/redaxo/source) to 5.21.4, where the bulk move loads each media object and requires permission for its source category in addition to the target, skipping and reporting files that fail, and selection checkboxes are rendered only for files whose own category the user may access. Advisory: https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-j9mx-x52f-48cw. No configuration switch disables the bulk move, so until upgrading the actionable mitigation is to audit and tighten backend media permissions: grant a media category permission only to users who may legitimately control every file reachable from it, and remember that permission for a category does not extend to its subcategories while searching inside that category still lists files from those subcategories (searchmode=global lists files across all categories). The trade-off is reduced editorial convenience for users who relied on cross-category searching, and this restriction must be applied per role because there is no global kill switch for the move action.

Technical ContextAI · show details

REDAXO is a PHP-based content management system, and this flaw lives in the mediapool addon's bulk handler at redaxo/src/addons/mediapool/pages/media.list.php. The code calls $perm->hasCategoryPerm($rexFileCategory) against the target category only, then iterates over submitted filenames and unconditionally writes category_id = $rexFileCategory via the database layer, so a filename acts as an attacker-controlled key into an object whose authorization was never evaluated - the classic CWE-639 (authorization bypass through user-controlled key) pattern, compounded by CWE-862 (missing authorization). The missing check exists nearby: the bulk delete loads the media object and validates hasCategoryPerm($media->getCategoryId()) on the source category, and the single-file move in media.detail.php validates both source and target; only the bulk move omits the source. The file list likewise rendered selection checkboxes using the permission of the currently displayed category rather than each file's own category, and since REDAXO media permissions do not inherit to subcategories, category-path searches and global searches exposed out-of-scope files as tickable. Once relocated into a controlled category, the media detail page's edit form exposes rex_media_service::updateMedia(), which overwrites the file on disk without checking whether it is in use, whereas rex_media_service::deleteMedia() refuses files that are still referenced.

DescriptionCVE.org

REDAXO before 5.21.4 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the media pool bulk move that checks only target category permission, ignoring the source category. Authenticated backend users with permission for one media category can move files from restricted categories into it, then silently replace their contents site-wide.

Technical POC Analysis

CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key) - the advisory also tags CWE-862.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-116898 is a high-severity authorization flaw in REDAXO's media pool that allows authenticated backend users with limited media permissions to move and replace files from restricted categories. This undermines content integrity across the organization, as manipulated media can be silently altered wherever embedded, affecting website visitors and damaging brand trust. Leadership should prioritize remediation this week to prevent potential misuse by authorized users.
