MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated REDAXO user account that an administrator has explicitly granted the backup[export] permission - by default only admins can access the backup addon, so this is a non-default role delegation (reflected in PR:L). With that permission, the user can select and export otherwise-sensitive tables (rex_user, rex_user_session, rex_user_passkey, rex_config, and tables of other applications sharing the same database), which are only deselected-by-default, not blocked, in versions <= 5.21.4. Limiting factors: full admin takeover via session hijack additionally requires that a victim admin currently has an active session or a stay-logged-in key stored in rex_user_session (the AT:P attack requirement); otherwise the attacker is limited to exporting password hashes for offline cracking. Admins themselves are not affected since they already have full access, and the issue is moot if backup[export] is granted only to trusted/admin users. |
| Impact | This is a real, actionable privilege-escalation issue but not an internet-wide emergency, and the signals are mostly consistent. The source CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) scores 7.7 (High): network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring an attack condition (AT:P) and existing low privileges (PR:L) - i.e. an authenticated non-admin account that an admin explicitly granted the backup[export] permission. This is a non-default configuration, which meaningfully narrows the exposed population versus the 'AV:N' impression. Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the two references are vendor/VulnCheck advisories, not exploit code, and no EPSS score or CISA KEV entry is present in the input, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a patched, authenticated-but-high-impact flaw rather than 'act_now'/'emergency'. Bottom line: prioritize patching where REDAXO is deployed and the backup[export] permission has been delegated to non-admins; where only admins hold that permission, the issue is not exploitable (admins already have full access). The main caveat is that the impact scoring (VI:H/VA:H) reflects the downstream admin takeover, not a direct integrity/availability write in the export feature itself, which is purely a disclosure of authentication tables. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An admin delegates the REDAXO backup[export] permission to a lower-privileged editor role. That editor opens Backup > Export, selects the rex_user_session table (offered but merely deselected by default), and exports it, obtaining plaintext session ids and stay-logged-in keys; they replay an admin's session id to take over the admin account without the password, or export rex_user to crack admin password hashes offline. No public exploit code is identified, and the session-hijack path requires an admin session or stay-logged-in key to currently exist (AT:P). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Missing authorization in the REDAXO backup addon's database export (core versions up to and including 5.21.4) lets a non-admin user who has been granted the backup[export] role permission export any table in the database, including rex_user, rex_user_session, rex_user_passkey and tables belonging to other applications sharing the same database. Because rex_user_session stores session IDs and stay-logged-in keys in plaintext, such a user can impersonate any account with an active session or persistent login - including administrators - and rex_user exposes password hashes for offline cracking, escalating the attacker from a limited role to full admin control. Exploitation is gated on an administrator explicitly delegating backup[export] to a non-admin account (by default only admins reach the backup addon), and full session-based takeover additionally requires a victim admin to have a live or stay-logged-in session; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor fixed the issue in 5.21.5.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: REDAXO core 5.21.5 (Composer composer/redaxo/source 5.21.5). Upgrade from any 5.21.x release to 5.21.5 per the advisory at https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-phjc-vx3j-58r3; after the fix non-admin users can export only prefixed REDAXO tables, with rex_user, rex_user_passkey and rex_user_session blocked in both the selection list and the submitted table set, while admins keep full export capability. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, audit and remove the backup[export] permission from all non-admin roles so the export page is reachable only by administrators, and review the backup addon's access assignments for any delegated export rights; the trade-off is that legitimate non-admin backup operators lose export functionality until the patch is applied. Also treat existing backup archives as sensitive, since exports by design include rex_config data that may contain addon credentials such as SMTP passwords, and consider rotating sessions and any credentials stored in rex_config if an untrusted user previously held backup[export].

Technical ContextAI · show details
REDAXO is a PHP-based content management system whose backup addon provides a 'Backup > Export' page that dumps database tables. The flaw is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the export endpoint validated only the backup[export] permission and then accepted an arbitrary list of tables from the request. Sensitive tables (rex_user, rex_user_passkey, rex_user_session) were merely excluded from the default selection in the UI, and other applications' tables in the same database were likewise never filtered - so a restricted user could submit any table name and receive its full contents. The fix in 5.21.5 enforces an explicit allowlist for non-admin users, restricted to tables carrying the REDAXO table prefix and excluding the three authentication tables, applied both to the rendered table selection and to the tables actually submitted; admins retain unrestricted export. Note that a backup export inherently contains all data of the exported tables, for example rex_config entries that may hold addon credentials such as SMTP passwords, so the export permission is data-sensitive by design.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
REDAXO before 5.21.5 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the backup addon export that accepts any database table, allowing non-admin users with the backup[export] permission to export rex_user, rex_user_session, and other applications' tables. Attackers can obtain plaintext session ids and stay-logged-in keys to take over admin accounts, or password hashes for offline cracking.

Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-116896 is a high-severity vulnerability in REDAXO CMS (core versions up to and including 5.21.4) that allows a non-admin user with the backup[export] role permission to export sensitive database tables, including user sessions and password hashes. This can lead to account impersonation-including administrators-escalating a limited user to full admin control, and threatens any application sharing the same database. Leadership should care because this undermines the authorization model and could result in complete compromise of the CMS and potentially other systems relying on the same database.
