MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) a Semantic MediaWiki install (3.0.0 through 7.3.0) with a Keyword-typed property in its default configuration - i.e., no display-format schema/URI configured, which is the branch that returns the raw caption; (2) an actor with ordinary page-edit rights to declare the Keyword property and annotate a payload (on wikis that permit anonymous editing this becomes unauthenticated, but the default is an edit-capable account); and (3) a victim who actively views the Special:Browse page for the annotated subject. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: the required viewer interaction (the payload fires only when someone opens that specific Browse page), the page-edit privilege needed to plant it on account-gated wikis, and dependence on the default no-display-format Keyword configuration. Maximum impact (administrative actions) is further gated on a privileged user happening to view the page. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue rather than a high-urgency emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3 (Medium), and the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' - not 'act_now' or 'emergency' - which aligns with a stored XSS that depends on a privileged user viewing a specific page. No EPSS probability and no CISA KEV entry were provided, so there is no signal of widespread or confirmed active exploitation; absence of these is not itself a defect but means mass-exploitation likelihood is unquantified. Against that, a detailed, working proof-of-concept is published in the GHSA vendor advisory (full reproduction steps and rendered output), lowering the barrier to exploitation. The input CVSS 4.0 vector sets PR:N (no privileges) on the assumption of anonymous-edit wikis, whereas the description and advisory state the realistic default requires ordinary page-edit rights - so for a typical account-gated wiki this is better modeled as low-privilege (PR:L); verify which editing policy your wiki runs. UI:P/UI:R applies because a victim must actually view the annotated Special:Browse page. The impact is bounded (C:L/I:L, token/session theft and actions in the viewer's context) rather than direct server compromise, though the advisory notes that if an administrator views the page the primitive could plausibly be leveraged for more damaging actions - described by the vendor as plausible, not demonstrated. Net: real and worth patching this cycle, but not a drop-everything issue absent exploitation evidence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with ordinary page-edit rights declares a property of type Keyword and annotates a content page with a short markup payload such as [[Kw::<img src=x onerror=alert(document.domain)>]]. The value is stored verbatim and rendered without HTML escaping on Special:Browse, so when another user - including an administrator - views that subject's Browse page, the script executes in their authenticated wiki session and can read session-scoped tokens and perform actions as that viewer. A step-by-step public PoC with the exact payload and rendered output is published in the GHSA advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in Semantic MediaWiki 3.0.0 through 7.3.0 allows an authenticated user with ordinary page-edit rights to store an event-handler payload in a Keyword-typed property value that Special:Browse renders without HTML escaping, so the script executes in the session of any user who opens that page, administrators included. Exploitation depends on the default Keyword configuration (no display-format URI), the ability to declare and annotate the property, and a victim who actively views the affected Browse page; the advisory documents a proof-of-concept, and there is no CISA KEV listing or other confirmation of active exploitation. The vendor-released patch is 7.3.1, and the assessed CVSS 3.1 score of 5.3 with a this-month priority reflects the edit-rights and user-interaction prerequisites rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Semantic MediaWiki 7.3.1 (Composer: mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki 7.3.1), which HTML-escapes the Keyword caption on every return path of getShortHTMLText and getLongHTMLText, including the default no-URI and no-linker branches, as described in https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-r7xx-9gqh-q8p9. Until the upgrade is deployed, restrict page-edit rights to trusted users and limit who may declare Keyword-typed properties, because the type is user-selectable and on wikis that permit anonymous editing the planting step becomes unauthenticated; tightening edit rights can disrupt legitimate contribution and should be scoped to the affected period. Configuring a display-format URI for Keyword properties may avoid the default raw-caption branch, but the alternate linker branch has not been verified as safe and should not be relied on as the sole control. As defense in depth, a Content Security Policy that blocks inline event-handler execution reduces the impact of the payload, with the trade-off that legitimate inline scripts on the wiki may break and require testing before rollout.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a MediaWiki extension that stores semantic annotations as typed property values and renders them in factboxes and browse views. The Keyword type is user-selectable, so no special right is needed to declare it, and values are persisted verbatim as a Blob with only a length check and control-character armoring, not strip_tags or HTML encoding. The root cause is in SMW\DataValues\KeywordValue, which overrides getShortHTMLText (src/DataValues/KeywordValue.php:112-135) and getLongHTMLText (:147-149) without delegating to the base StringValueFormatter, so the base smwfXMLContentEncode escaping is unreachable on this path; in the default case, where no display-format schema is configured, the internal URI builder returns an empty string and the override returns the raw caption, and it also returns the raw caption when no linker is supplied. That value is placed as the unescaped body of a span via Html::rawElement (src/MediaWiki/Specials/Browse/HtmlBuilder.php:639-645), emitted through an unescaped triple-brace Mustache field (templates/FactboxProperty.mustache:10), and added by SpecialBrowse::addHTML with no parser or sanitizer, which violates the CWE-79 invariant that displayed values must be HTML-safe. The earlier CVE-2025-61682 stored-XSS advisory concerns a client-side tooltip data-attribute sink and is a different issue, not a duplicate or a fix bypass.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki from 3.0.0 before 7.3.1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with page-edit rights to inject HTML through Keyword-typed property values rendered unescaped on Special:Browse. Attackers can annotate a Keyword property with an event-handler payload that executes JavaScript in viewers' sessions, including administrators, to read tokens and perform actions.
