2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires: (1) an authenticated account with comment access to the target page (PR:L - any registered user, ACL '+'); (2) allow_raw_html = true, which is the shipped default (includes/YesWikiInit.php:234); (3) comments_activated = true, also default; and critically (4) comments actually enabled on at least one reachable page - the global default_comment_acl is comments-closed, so an admin or page owner must have explicitly enabled comments, meaning default fresh installs are NOT exploitable until this common, documented configuration is applied. Once a comment-enabled page exists, the chain is deterministic with no further attacker steps. Execution needs a victim (visitor or admin) to view the page, but no victim click beyond viewing. Primary limiting factors: the comment-enablement precondition narrows the exploitable target population, authentication is required, and impact is constrained to script in the wiki origin (no script-src CSP directive is set, so inline/event-handler script is unrestricted). Interim mitigation per the advisory: set allow_raw_html to false (routes "".."" through htmlspecialchars but disables legitimate raw-HTML in page content); restricting comments reduces exposure but does not fix root cause.

Impact

This is a moderate-severity, authenticated stored XSS (CWE-79) in YesWiki, and the signals point to a real-but-bounded issue rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity attack by an authenticated low-privilege user (PR:L) with no attacker-side user interaction required; impact is capped at Low across confidentiality and integrity for both the vulnerable and subsequent systems (VC:L/VI:L/SC:L/SI:L), consistent with cookie/session theft and script execution rather than direct full compromise, hence the 5.3 base. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), aligning with the moderate score. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV entry were provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; absence of these is not itself a finding. A detailed public PoC reference exists in the GHSA advisory (exact /api/comments request and payload), so exploitation is well-understood and low-effort for anyone with a comment-capable account, but it is not verified as weaponized/working exploit code and must not be conflated with active exploitation. The most important nuance limiting real-world risk is a deployment precondition: comments must be enabled on a target page (global default_comment_acl is comments-closed), so default fresh installs are not exploitable until an operator enables comments - a documented, common, but non-automatic configuration. Net: a credible priority to patch on a normal cycle, elevated for any YesWiki instance that already has comments enabled on reachable pages, but not a drop-everything issue absent KEV/EPSS signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A registered low-privilege user posts a comment on a comment-enabled page via POST /api/comments, wrapping an image/onerror JavaScript payload in the wiki "".."" raw-HTML syntax. Because allow_raw_html is true by default and the comment template renders the body through Twig's |raw filter, the script is stored and then executes automatically in the browser of every subsequent viewer - including administrators - with no further interaction, enabling session-cookie theft. A full public PoC reference exists in the vendor GHSA advisory, though it is not verified as a packaged working exploit.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in YesWiki 4.2.0 through 4.6.7 lets any authenticated user who can post a comment embed raw HTML and JavaScript using the wiki's "".."" raw-HTML syntax, which is saved with only whitespace trimming and later rendered through a Twig raw filter, so the payload executes in the wiki origin for every visitor of that page, including administrators. Shipped defaults (allow_raw_html = true, comments_activated = true) keep the path open, but exploitation additionally requires that comments be enabled on at least one page, because the global default_comment_acl is comments-closed; the vendor confirms the flaw is fixed in 4.7.0, and the GitHub security advisory includes proof-of-concept request steps, while no CISA KEV listing or other evidence of active exploitation was supplied. Scored 5.3 on CVSS 4.0 (PR:L, scope changed, low confidentiality and integrity impact), the realistic outcome is script execution in a higher-privileged viewer's session, plausibly enabling session theft and follow-on wiki actions rather than server compromise.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: YesWiki 4.7.0 (composer package yeswiki/yeswiki, fixed in 4.7.0) - upgrade from any 4.2.0 through 4.6.7 deployment, and review the advisory at https://github.com/YesWiki/yeswiki/security/advisories/GHSA-wq96-vjjh-hfc6 for the upstream fix description. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, the advisory's interim mitigation is to set allow_raw_html to false in the wiki configuration, which routes the "".."" syntax through htmlspecialchars(); the trade-off is that this also disables legitimate raw-HTML use in ordinary page content. Restricting comment posting to trusted users or disabling comments on public pages reduces exposure but does not address the root cause, since the missing sanitization on the comment storage and rendering path remains in place.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation) arising from a trust-boundary confusion inside YesWiki's comment pipeline. Comment bodies submitted to POST /api/comments (ACL '+', any authenticated user, with a secondary entry point at handlers/page/addcomment.php) are handled by CommentService::addCommentIfAuthorized, which applies only trim() before SavePage(); PageManager::save() adds SQL escaping and chop() but no HTML neutralization. On display the body passes through the default wakka formatter, whose handler for the "".."" raw-HTML construct returns the wrapped content verbatim when the allow_raw_html option is true (formatters/wakka.php:277-281), skipping the htmlspecialchars() branch used when the option is false. The templating layer then disables auto-escaping explicitly: templates/comment.twig renders {{ comment.body|raw }}, and the same unescaped body also reaches the admin comment-management table (templates/comment-table.twig) and HTML notification e-mails (templates/comments/notify-email-html.twig and notify-tag-email-html.twig). allow_raw_html is true by default (includes/YesWikiInit.php:234), and the Content-Security-Policy sets only frame-ancestors with no script-src directive, so inline event-handler script is unrestricted. The raw-HTML syntax exists to let trusted page authors embed literal HTML, but comments flow through the identical formatter with no distinction of caller trust.

DescriptionCVE.org

YesWiki from 4.2.0 before 4.7.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows authenticated users to inject script into comment bodies using the wakka raw-HTML syntax. Attackers can post comments via the /api/comments endpoint that render unescaped through the Twig raw filter, executing JavaScript in administrators' and visitors' sessions.
