MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Defense Evasion The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all of: (1) Google SSO is enabled on the Snipe-IT instance; (2) the deployment uses email-as-username, or the targeted account specifically has an email-shaped username, so that User::where('username', googleEmail) returns a row; (3) the targeted account has been deactivated in Snipe-IT (activated=0); and (4) the attacker still controls the matching, unrevoked Google Workspace identity. Limiting factors: default Snipe-IT installations use the firstname.lastname username format, where the username/email mismatch makes the lookup return NULL and the instance is NOT affected even with Google SSO enabled; the attacker must possess valid live Google credentials for an identity matching an existing (deactivated) Snipe-IT username, making this primarily an offboarding-window / former-insider threat rather than anonymous external compromise. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, but its real-world reach is gated by specific deployment preconditions rather than being a universal remote compromise. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) scores 9.2 and correctly uses AT:P (attack requirements present) to signal that exploitation is network-reachable and procedurally simple but depends on non-default conditions - not a point-and-click flaw against every instance. The vuln.today Decision label is act_now and the report originates from VulnCheck, both reinforcing urgency for affected deployments. There is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS value in the provided data, so there is no evidence of widespread automated exploitation; the GHSA advisory and VulnCheck advisory are analytical write-ups, not published working exploit code. The conflicting signal to weigh is PR:N versus the practical prerequisite that the attacker already be a (now-deactivated) legitimate user holding a still-live Google identity - the CVSS correctly rates privileges on the Snipe-IT system as none, but this is realistically an insider/offboarding-window threat rather than an anonymous external one. Net: a real priority for organizations running Google SSO with email-as-username, and a near-non-issue for default installations. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An employee is offboarded and their Snipe-IT account is deactivated (activated=0), but their Google Workspace account has not yet been disabled. Because the Snipe-IT instance uses email-as-username and the Google callback never checked the activated flag, the former employee signs in through Google SSO and is handed an authenticated session at their prior permission tier - including admin if they held it. No public working exploit code is identified; the GHSA advisory documents the exact vulnerable lookup and fix. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026
Snipe-IT 8.6.2 and earlier can re-admit deactivated accounts - including accounts with admin rights - through the Google SSO callback, because GoogleAuthController::handleGoogleCallback logged in whichever local user matched the incoming Google email as a username without enforcing the activated flag. The exposure is gated by deployment shape: Google SSO must be enabled, the instance must use email-as-username (or the targeted account must have an email-shaped username), the Snipe-IT account must already be deactivated, and the attacker must still hold a live, unrevoked Google Workspace identity for that address. Default installations that use the firstname.lastname username format are not affected because the username/email mismatch makes the lookup return NULL; this makes the bug primarily an offboarding-window and former-insider risk rather than anonymous external compromise, and it has been assigned an act_now priority. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in Snipe-IT 8.6.3 via commit 5fea2fadc0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Snipe-IT 8.6.3 or later, which is the vendor-released patch and contains commit 5fea2fadc0 adding the activated check in GoogleAuthController::handleGoogleCallback; the advisory at https://github.com/grokability/snipe-it/security/advisories/GHSA-xf36-wx48-5rqp documents the change, and administrators who cannot upgrade immediately can apply the equivalent condition (rejecting any matched user whose activated flag is not set, or constraining the lookup with activated = 1) to that controller. Until the fix is deployed, the preconditions themselves can be removed, each with a cost: disable Google SSO so the callback is unreachable, at the price of removing a convenience login path for all federated users; or revoke the departing user's Google Workspace identity at the same moment the Snipe-IT account is deactivated so no live Google credential matches an existing username, which requires tightening the offboarding runbook across both systems; or, on deployments using email-as-username, verify that deactivated accounts cannot be matched at all, which in practice means changing the username scheme to the default firstname.lastname format - a disruptive migration for an established instance. Administrators should also audit accounts deactivated while still holding live Google identities, particularly admin-tier accounts, since any session obtained through this path carried the account's original permission level. Installations on the default firstname.lastname username format are not affected even with Google SSO enabled and can be prioritized behind email-as-username deployments.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Snipe-IT is a Laravel-based IT asset management application whose Google SSO path is implemented in app/Http/Controllers/GoogleAuthController.php. On the OAuth callback, handleGoogleCallback resolved the local account with an Eloquent lookup of the form User::where('username', $socialUser->getEmail())->first() and then immediately called Auth::login($user, true), issuing a persistent authenticated session with the remember flag. Every other authentication path in the product - SAML, LDAP, REMOTE_USER and local password - constrained its lookup with activated = 1; the Google path omitted that predicate entirely, so the authorization decision rested solely on username/email equality. This is classified as CWE-285 (Improper Authorization) with the vendor also citing CWE-287 (Improper Authentication): the code neither validated that the matched account was still enabled nor treated deactivation as a revocation event for federated identities. The failure mode only materializes when a Google email address is also a valid local username string - an email-as-username deployment, or a single account whose username happens to be email-shaped. Under the default firstname.lastname username scheme the lookup returns no row and authentication fails closed, which is why the vendor describes default installations as unaffected even with Google SSO turned on. The upstream fix adds an explicit if (! $user->activated) check after the lookup and redirects with auth/message.account_not_activated instead of calling Auth::login, which the advisory describes as functionally equivalent to appending ->where('activated', '=', '1') to the query; the trigger conditions for exploitation are exactly those enumerated in the advisory rather than any timing or race behavior.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Snipe-IT before 8.6.3 contains an authentication bypass in GoogleAuthController::handleGoogleCallback, which logs in the user whose username matches the Google account email without enforcing the activated flag. Deactivated users with email-shaped usernames and still-live Google identities can sign in via Google SSO and regain sessions at their original permission level, including admin.

Executive ViewAI
Snipe-IT versions 8.6.2 and earlier contain a critical authentication bypass (CVE-2026-116199) that can re-admit deactivated accounts, including administrators, when Google SSO is enabled and usernames are email addresses. This primarily affects organizations during offboarding windows or when former insiders retain active Google Workspace identities, potentially allowing unauthorized access to sensitive asset management data. Leadership should prioritize immediate mitigation given the act-now priority and potential for privileged access abuse.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable Google SSO authentication, restrict network access to Snipe-IT, enforce immediate revocation of Google Workspace identities for departed users, and audit deactivated accounts for reactivation attempts.
