MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account that passes User::canComment() and has permission to watch the target video, comments must be displayed to other users, and a victim must actually view the malicious comment (UI:P/R). The payload must be structured as a leading HTML block whose first token is an <img> tag carrying an event handler (e.g. '<img src=x onerror=alert(1)>'); the advisory confirms that inline forms with a preceding prefix (e.g. 'prefix <img src="x" onerror="alert(1)">') ARE sanitized, so the leading-block position is a specific prerequisite. Limiting factors: attacker privilege (comment permission, not unauthenticated), required victim interaction, the specific leading-img payload shape, applicability only to versions 26.0-29.3.0 (25.0 unaffected), and a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline event handlers, which mitigates this payload. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity stored XSS (CWE-79) with modest, well-bounded real-world risk rather than an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N, 5.1) and the vendor GHSA's CVSS 3.1 (5.4, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) agree closely: network-reachable but requiring both attacker privileges (comment permission, PR:L) and victim interaction (viewing the comment, UI:P/R), with only low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact. There is no KEV listing and no EPSS score in the provided data, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a prioritize-but-not-drop-everything posture. The strongest conflict in the inputs is patch status: the top-level metadata says 'Patch: Available from vendor' and lists commit f13587c as a patch reference, but the authoritative WWBN GHSA advisory states that this very commit is the regression that INTRODUCED the flaw (by disabling Parsedown safe mode) and that 'No verified patch or patched release was identified as of 2026-10-08,' explicitly noting that updating to 29.3.0 or master does not fix it - treat the 'patch available' metadata as unverified and defer to the vendor advisory. Exploitation evidence is renderer-level only: the advisory reproduced the sanitizer bypass with a standalone test but did not test live authenticated browser exploitation, and a CSP blocking inline event handlers mitigates the payload. Net: a genuine but privilege- and interaction-gated XSS in a niche product, not a high-CVSS-but-no-real-risk false alarm nor a critical emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding an ordinary account with permission to comment on a viewable video posts a comment beginning with a leading HTML image block such as '<img src=x onerror=alert(1)>'. Because markDownToHTML()'s block handler passes leading <img>/<a> tags to Parsedown's raw HTML handler without the inline sanitizer, the onerror handler survives rendering and executes in the AVideo origin when another user views the comment, enabling session-context actions or reading of accessible application data. A public PoC reference exists (the vendor advisory and VulnCheck), demonstrating the renderer bypass at the Parsedown level; it is not verified as working live browser exploitation, and a CSP that blocks inline event handlers can neutralize this specific payload. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in WWBN AVideo 26.0 through 29.3.0 allows any user who holds comment permission on a viewable video to persist JavaScript that executes in other viewers' browsers under the application origin. The payload must begin an HTML block with an image tag carrying an event handler, because the custom Parsedown subclass sanitizes inline image/link markup but hands leading block-level <img>/<a> tags to the raw HTML handler. Exploitation requires an authenticated commenter, comment visibility, and a victim viewing the comment (UI:P); impact is bounded to low confidentiality/integrity per the assessed vector, and a CSP that blocks inline event handlers neutralizes the demonstrated payload. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified, and no verified patched release exists as of the advisory date.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis: the advisory states that no verified fix or patched release existed as of 2026-10-08, that updating to 29.3.0 does not remediate, and that master commit 69b55e7811ac2a08cc5d7cb9292e3a8f2e643fdd remains affected. Note that the reference tagged as a patch, commit f13587c59346b4bf0f449273021d29b869594559, is the commit that introduced the regression, not a fix - do not deploy it as remediation. Until a fixed release ships, either disable comment submission and display for untrusted content (effective but removes a core community feature) or enforce a strict HTML allowlist at the final rendering boundary in view/videoComments.php that strips event-handler attributes and unsafe URI schemes from both block and inline HTML, including continuation lines (requires code changes that must be re-validated against legitimate Markdown formatting). A restrictive Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline event handlers mitigates this specific payload as defense in depth, at the cost of breaking any legitimate inline scripts the deployment relies on. The advisory notes the permanent fix must apply a single sanitization policy to block and inline HTML with regression tests for leading-image payloads, multiline blocks and unsafe URI schemes; monitoring GHSA-cx46-26xc-2w7f is the way to learn when a patched tag is assigned.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation) arises here from an inconsistent sanitization boundary rather than from missing escaping at storage. Comments are HTML-escaped with xss_esc() on submission in objects/commentAddNew.json.php (gated by User::canComment() plus watch permission), decoded with xss_esc_back() on retrieval in objects/comment.php, and then rendered by markDownToHTML() in objects/functionsSecurity.php. The regression commit f13587c59346b4bf0f449273021d29b869594559 replaced Parsedown safe mode and markup escaping with a custom ParsedownSafeWithLinks class that deliberately sets setSafeMode(false) and setMarkupEscaped(false) and relies on its own overrides. Those overrides sanitize inlineMarkup() image and link tags (stripping onerror and rejecting javascript:/vbscript:/data: sources), but blockMarkup() simply whitelists a leading <a> or <img> tag and delegates to Parsedown's raw HTML block handler, so event-handler attributes and arbitrary continuation content in that leading block survive. The sanitized output is then inserted with jQuery .html() in view/videoComments.php, a DOM sink that turns any surviving attribute into script execution. The gap is structural: storage-time escaping cannot protect a render-time boundary that intentionally re-enables raw HTML for one code path and not the other.

DescriptionCVE.org
WWBN AVideo 26.0 through 29.3.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows authenticated commenters to inject JavaScript because markDownToHTML() preserves event-handler attributes in leading HTML blocks. Attackers can post a comment starting with an img tag carrying an onerror handler, which bypasses the inline sanitizer and executes in viewers' browsers under the application origin.
