Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires two specific non-default conditions stated by the vendor: (1) the admin REST API must be isolated via an explicitly set admin.listeners property pointing to a separate listener from the main listeners property, and (2) security must be enforced through REST extensions in rest.extension.classes (e.g. BasicAuthSecurityRestExtension) - the bypass is that these extensions silently fail to register on the admin listener. The attacker additionally needs network access to that admin listener. Deployments that leave admin.listeners unset (the default, where admin resources share the regular listener) are not affected, which is also the vendor's recommended mitigation. Impact is limited to the /admin/loggers endpoint: information disclosure of logger/class names and read/write of log levels (including cluster-wide propagation), affecting observability and availability rather than data or code integrity. |
| Impact | No CVSS score or vector is provided in the input, so attack metrics must be inferred from the vendor description rather than confirmed. The vuln.today Decision label is 'monitor' (the lowest urgency tier here), there is no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS score is supplied, and no public exploit or PoC is referenced - so all available decision signals point to low real-world urgency rather than an emergency. The underlying flaw is a genuine authentication bypass (REST security extensions from rest.extension.classes are not applied to the separate admin listener), but it is strongly gated: it only manifests when operators explicitly configure admin.listeners as a separate listener AND rely on rest.extension.classes (e.g. BasicAuthSecurityRestExtension) for security - a non-default, opt-in hardening configuration. The exposed capability is also narrow: read/write of the /admin/loggers endpoint, which discloses loaded class names and lets an attacker change log levels (including cluster-wide via scope=cluster), affecting observability and potentially availability through log suppression or log flooding - not code execution, data exfiltration of Kafka records, or cluster takeover. Net assessment: a real, vendor-confirmed bypass that is low-to-moderate priority - the broad deployment of Kafka is offset by the narrow impact, the non-default triggering configuration, and the absence of any exploitation signal. Teams running the specific admin.listeners configuration should prioritize it above those who are not, who are unaffected. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator has hardened a Kafka Connect cluster by isolating the admin REST API on a separate listener via admin.listeners and enabling BasicAuthSecurityRestExtension on the main listener; an attacker with network reachability to that admin listener sends unauthenticated requests to /admin/loggers, reads logger names to fingerprint loaded classes and active security extensions, then issues a write with scope=cluster to set the root logger to OFF (suppressing security logging) or TRACE (flooding logs) across all workers. No public exploit or PoC is identified at time of analysis; the attack is simple HTTP requests requiring no authentication once the admin listener is network-reachable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Authentication bypass in Apache Kafka Connect's isolated admin REST API allows unauthenticated network attackers to read and write logger settings, including cluster-wide changes via scope=cluster, when admin.listeners is explicitly configured as a separate listener and REST security extensions such as BasicAuthSecurityRestExtension are used. The issue affects Apache Kafka 2.4.0 through versions before 4.2.2 and 4.3.0 through versions before 4.3.2, with fixes released in 4.2.2, 4.3.2, and 4.4.0; deployments that leave admin.listeners unset are not affected. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the assessed severity is moderate with limited confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact confined to the /admin/loggers endpoint.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Apache Kafka 4.2.2, 4.3.2, or 4.4.0, where REST extensions specified via rest.extension.classes also apply to admin.listeners. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the vendor's stated mitigation by removing the admin.listeners configuration or leaving it unset, so admin resources share the regular listener and inherit its security extensions; the trade-off is that the admin endpoints are no longer isolated on a separate listener and become reachable wherever the main listener is exposed, though they remain subject to the configured authentication and authorization filters. The vendor advisory is at https://kafka.apache.org/cve-list.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache Kafka Connect exposes a REST API whose admin resources can be isolated onto a dedicated listener via the admin.listeners property. When operators set admin.listeners to a listener separate from the main listeners property, REST extensions listed in rest.extension.classes - such as BasicAuthSecurityRestExtension - are registered and applied to the primary listener's resource configuration but are not registered or instantiated for the admin listener's resource configuration. The trigger, as described by the vendor, is this specific non-default configuration: the admin endpoints mounted under the separate admin listener, notably /admin/loggers, do not inherit the authentication and authorization filters that protect the main listener. An attacker with network access to that admin listener can consequently read logger names and levels and write logger levels, including with scope=cluster to propagate changes to all Connect workers. The flaw affects observability and availability rather than data or code integrity; no CWE identifier is supplied in the available data. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_kafka:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

Severity by source
Remote unauthenticated requests reach the admin listener (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N); impact is limited to logger-name disclosure and log-level changes, so C/I/A are each Low and scope unchanged.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Apache Kafka Connect contains an authentication bypass vulnerability affecting the admin REST API when admin.listeners is configured with a separate listener from the main listeners property.
When operators isolate the admin REST API by explicitly configuring the "admin.listeners" property, REST extensions specified via rest.extension.classes (such as BasicAuthSecurityRestExtension) are not registered or applied to the admin resource configuration.
While the primary REST API listener (configured via listeners) enforces configured authentication and authorization filters, endpoints mounted under the separate admin listener (/admin/loggers) fail to inherit or instantiate these extension filters. As a result, the admin logger endpoint accepts unauthenticated read and write requests even when security extensions are active on the main listener.
Impact:
An unauthenticated attacker with network access to the admin listener can:
- Read the complete set of logger names and levels, disclosing loaded class names and which security extensions are in use.
- Write logger levels, including with scope=cluster which propagates the change to all workers in the Connect cluster. This can be used to suppress
logging (setting root to OFF) or generate excessive log output (setting root to TRACE), potentially impacting availability and observability.
Mitigation:
Users who cannot upgrade immediately can remove the admin.listeners configuration (or leave it unset). When unset, admin resources share the regular listener and inherit its security extensions.
Resolution:
From Apache Kafka 4.2.2, 4.3.2, and 4.4.0, we make sure the REST extensions specified via "rest.extension.classes" will also apply to "admin.listeners".
