| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim to run the 'oc image extract' command against a container image the attacker controls; the malicious image must embed symbolic or hard links whose targets are absolute paths or point to sibling directories of the extraction destination, combined with a chained file entry that writes through those links. Limiting factors: it is not remotely triggerable (AV:L) and depends entirely on user interaction (UI:R) - the target must choose to extract the attacker's image - and the blast radius is bounded by the privileges of the user invoking oc, so a non-root operator cannot modify root-owned files. There is no indication a special non-default configuration is needed; the flaw is in oc's default extraction link-handling. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity issue (CVSS 5.5) and the signals consistently point to a real-but-non-urgent risk rather than an emergency. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N shows a local attack vector with required user interaction: the attacker cannot reach a victim over the network and must instead get a target to voluntarily run 'oc image extract' against an attacker-supplied image, which sharply limits mass exploitation. Impact is integrity-only (I:H, with C:N and A:N), consistent with arbitrary file write/modification rather than data theft or service disruption. PR:N indicates no attacker authentication is required to the target system - the attacker's leverage is supplying a malicious image, not holding an account - so per the vector this is best described as unauthenticated-but-interaction-dependent. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now or emergency), and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV. EPSS is NOT provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here; no POC or exploit reference is present either. Net: a legitimate patch-this-month item for OpenShift users who run image extraction, not a drop-everything network-facing crisis, with the caveat that EPSS/KEV/POC data is simply absent rather than confirmed-benign. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a malicious container image to a registry and induces a developer or operator to run 'oc image extract' against it. Because oc does not sanitize symbolic/hard link targets, links (combined with a chained file entry) that point to absolute paths or sibling directories cause the extraction to write attacker-controlled content outside the intended output directory, modifying files on the host with the privileges of the user running oc. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Arbitrary file write in the OpenShift oc client's image extract command allows an attacker who supplies a malicious container image to place content outside the intended extraction directory with the privileges of the user running oc image extract. Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4 is affected because the client does not properly sanitize symbolic and hard link targets that are absolute paths or sibling directories, and the impact is limited to integrity (CVSS 5.5, AV:L/UI:R). No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified in the available intelligence, and the risk is assessed as real but non-urgent.
RemediationAI
No exact fixed version is listed in the supplied intelligence, so confirm patch availability and the fixed OpenShift Container Platform 4 release in the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-115424 and the Bugzilla record at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2558338. Until a patched oc build is confirmed, avoid running oc image extract against container images from untrusted sources, perform extraction as a low-privileged user in a disposable or isolated environment, and pre-screen image layers for symbolic or hard links whose targets are absolute or point to sibling directories; these measures reduce exposure and blast radius but do not correct the link-sanitization flaw itself.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a UNIX symbolic-link following issue (CWE-61) in the oc client used with Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4. During oc image extract, the client unpacks container image layers and handles embedded symbolic and hard links; it fails to reject link targets that resolve to absolute paths or to sibling directories of the extraction destination, so a chained file entry can follow those links and write outside the destination. The supplied CPE is cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_openshift_container_platform_4:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with no release-level narrowing; the CVSS vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, meaning the issue is locally reachable, requires user interaction, has no privilege requirement noted, and affects integrity only. No special non-default configuration is indicated; the behavior is in the default extraction link handling.

Attacker needs no account but cannot act without the victim locally running oc extract on their image, so AV:L/PR:N/UI:R; arbitrary file write gives I:H while C:N and A:N.

DescriptionNVD
A flaw was found in the OpenShift client oc. When extracting container image layers with oc image extract, the application fails to properly sanitize symbolic and hard link targets pointing to absolute paths or to sibling directories of the extraction destination. An attacker who supplies a malicious container image can exploit this vulnerability by embedding links, and a chained file entry, that reference locations outside the intended extraction directory. This allows the attacker to write attacker-controlled content to arbitrary locations on the host filesystem with the privileges of the user running the command, potentially leading to file modification outside the destination directory.
