| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to open/view a malicious HTML email inside a vulnerable Roundcube Webmail instance (before 1.6.20, or 1.7.x before 1.7.5) that relies on the built-in remote-content blocker. The attacker must encode the url() FuncIRI token using CSS Syntax Level 3 escape sequences - hex escapes such as \000075rl( or u\72 l(, or literal backslash escapes like u\rl( - placed in a presentation attribute (e.g. fill) or smuggled through an SVG SMIL animation's values, to, from, or by attributes, which rcube_washtml previously did not all inspect. Limiting factors: impact is confined to unconsented remote content loading (privacy/tracking leakage of read status and client IP), there is no confidentiality of stored data, integrity, or availability impact; HTML message rendering must be enabled and the user must display the message; only unpatched versions are affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-urgency issue, and the signals are internally consistent at the medium level. The NVD CVSS of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) reflects the reality: the only impact is confidentiality (C:L) - an attacker learns that a message was opened and can harvest the victim's IP/client data via a tracking beacon. There is no integrity or availability impact and no code execution. EPSS is NOT provided in the input, and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation - this is a defense-in-depth filter bypass, not a widely-weaponized flaw. One signal conflict to verify: the CVSS vector states UI:N, but the vulnerability is about remote content loading from an HTML message, which in practice requires the victim to open/view that message - so the 'no user interaction' metric is questionable and I have independently reassessed it as UI:R below. In short, this is a legitimate privacy/anti-tracking regression that should be patched on normal maintenance cadence, not a high-real-risk emergency despite the network attack vector. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a crafted HTML email in which a url() FuncIRI is obfuscated with CSS escape sequences (e.g. \000075rl( or u\72 l() inside a fill attribute or an SVG SMIL animation's to/from/by value. Because rcube_washtml only recognized a few escaped spellings, the remote URL slips past the content blocker and the victim's mail client fetches it automatically when the message is viewed, leaking read-receipt and IP/client metadata to the attacker without consent. No standalone public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the upstream fix commit publicly includes working bypass payloads in its test cases. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Roundcube Webmail installations before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x releases before 1.7.5 can be tricked into loading attacker-controlled remote content from an HTML email without the recipient's consent. The built-in HTML sanitizer (rcube_washtml) only recognized a limited set of CSS escape spellings of the url() token, so a sender can write the same FuncIRI reference as \000075rl(, u\72 l(, or u\rl( inside a presentation attribute or an SVG SMIL animation and slip past the remote-content blocker when the victim simply opens the message. The result is limited to privacy leakage - read receipts, client IP address, and tracking-pixel-style confirmation of message display - with no code execution, data disclosure, integrity, or availability impact; a vendor patch ships in 1.6.20 and 1.7.5, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 and 1.7.5. Upgrade to 1.6.20 or later on the 1.6 branch, or 1.7.5 or later on the 1.7 branch, per the advisory at https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5; distributors should track the corresponding Debian bug at https://bugs.debian.org/1151279 for packaged builds. If a source build is used, the two upstream commits https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/commit/2f74267f0e13bed7182b1d2294cc4f3c5c46dcee and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/commit/ff4fcfdd2952f9d09947cc9c18137f381f27caf1 apply the css_unescape() normalisation and the expanded SMIL attribute inspection and can be backported; note this is the second fix in this area, so earlier url()-blocking patches should be treated as insufficient. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, compensate by disabling HTML message display so that messages are viewed as plain text - this removes the attack surface entirely at the cost of significant usability loss for users who rely on formatted mail - or, at the network layer, restrict outbound HTTP/HTTPS from the webmail host to explicitly allowed destinations so any bypassed fetch fails at egress, accepting that legitimate proxied images from permitted hosts must be whitelisted. Because the impact is confined to unconsented remote content loading, prioritise the upgrade alongside other webmail hardening rather than as an emergency action.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube renders untrusted HTML mail through rcube_washtml, a whitelist-based sanitizer that rewrites or strips dangerous markup and, in particular, neutralizes CSS url() FuncIRI references so that messages cannot silently fetch external resources. The sanitizer detected the url() token with a regular expression that enumerated specific escaped spellings (\0*75, \0*55, and so on), which is a textbook CWE-184 incomplete-list-of-disallowed-inputs flaw: each newly discovered CSS escape form had to be added to the pattern manually, and any spelling not on the list passed through. CSS Syntax Level 3 (section 4.3.7) defines two escape forms - a backslash followed by one to six hex digits optionally terminated by whitespace, and a backslash followed by a literal non-hex character - so url( can be written in effectively unbounded ways. The upstream fix inverts the approach: a new css_unescape() helper resolves both escape forms (mapping null, out-of-range, and surrogate code points to U+FFFD) before matching against a trivial /(u)(r)(l)\(/i pattern, and the SVG SMIL inspection was extended from the single values attribute to also cover to, from, and by, since SMIL animation takes its value from any of them. The accompanying test cases cover hex escapes with terminating whitespace, zero-padded hex escapes, combined literal escapes, FuncIRI smuggled through SMIL attributes, and a regression case ensuring an unrelated escape such as \23 ff0000 is not over-blocked. Note that while the supplied tag list labels this an authentication bypass, it is properly a sanitizer/filter bypass affecting content privacy, not a login or session control.

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a remote content blocking bypass in the handling of FuncIRI attributes. rcube_washtml detected the CSS url() token with a pattern that enumerated only some of its escaped spellings, so values using other CSS escape sequences, for example \000075rl( or u\72 l(, were not recognized and remote content was loaded from an HTML message without the user's consent. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix remote content blocking bypass via CSS escapes in FuncIRI attributes (again)”, which resolves CSS escapes before matching and also inspects the to, from and by attributes.
