| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the victim be a Roundcube Webmail user running a version before 1.6.20 or 1.7.x before 1.7.5, and that this user actively invoke the Bounce (resend) action on an attacker-controlled email. The attacker's prerequisite is only the ability to deliver an email containing a From display-name with CRLF control characters embedded in an RFC 2047 encoded word; no authentication to Roundcube is needed by the attacker. The key limiting factor is the mandatory victim interaction (the Bounce action is not a default/automatic operation), which bounds this to targeted social-engineering-style abuse rather than automated mass exploitation; impact is confined to injected headers in the resent message (integrity), with no confidentiality or availability effect. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity flaw, not a top-priority emergency. The input provides a CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N, base 5.8) with only Integrity impact (I:L) and a changed scope, which is consistent with header injection rather than data theft or code execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the input, so by the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - exploitation is plausible but not demonstrated to be occurring. The single biggest signal conflict is UI: the supplied vector claims UI:N, yet the description makes clear a logged-in user must actively invoke the Bounce (resend) action on an attacker-supplied message for the injected CRLF headers to take effect, which strongly implies UI:R. This user-interaction dependency materially lowers real-world risk below what the 5.8 network-vector score suggests. Note the 'RCE' tag is inconsistent with the vector and description - there is no code-execution or confidentiality/availability impact here; this is a CWE-99-class mail header injection. Treat as a routine patch-management item for Roundcube operators, prioritized by exposure rather than as an actively exploited threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a crafted email to a Roundcube user whose From display-name contains CRLF sequences hidden inside an RFC 2047 encoded word. When the victim later uses the Bounce (resend) action on that message, rcube_mime::decode_address_list() emits the unsanitized display name, injecting arbitrary headers (e.g. extra recipients or routing headers) into the outgoing message. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the fix commit ships a unit test demonstrating the injection technique. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Header injection in Roundcube Webmail's Bounce (resend) action affects installations before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5, where rcube_mime::decode_address_list() failed to strip control characters from decoded From display-names, allowing CRLF sequences in an RFC 2047 encoded word to insert arbitrary headers into the message produced when a user resends it. Attackers need only deliver a crafted email and persuade the victim to invoke Bounce; unauthenticated remote attackers can trigger it, but the mandatory user interaction confines abuse to targeted social-engineering scenarios with integrity-only impact. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and vendor patches are released in 1.6.20 and 1.7.5.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Roundcube Webmail 1.6.20 and 1.7.5. Upgrade to 1.6.20 (1.6.x branch) or 1.7.5 (1.7.x branch) using the official release tarballs at https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.6.20 and https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/tag/1.7.5, or apply the upstream commits d3a35545fdaf72b02a9a4d670064895488e9d9d0 and 3a136465c965776a5f636587187626985dae4f3b, which add a preg_replace('/[\x00-\x1F]+/', ' ', ...) sanitization step in rcube_mime::decode_address_list(); see the advisory at https://roundcube.net/news/2026/10/19/security-updates-1.6.20-and-1.7.5 and the Debian tracking bug https://bugs.debian.org/1151279. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable or restrict the Bounce/resend capability for untrusted users (trade-off: loss of a convenience feature and a degraded webmail workflow), and treat outbound mail from Roundcube as untrusted at the MTA layer by stripping or rejecting messages whose headers contain unexpected X-* or duplicate header fields generated from resent messages (trade-off: possible false positives on legitimate custom headers). Because exploitation requires the victim to resend a crafted message, user awareness around bouncing messages from unknown senders offers a limited, non-durable mitigation only.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roundcube is a PHP-based IMAP webmail client; its MIME handling library, program/lib/Roundcube/rcube_mime.php, decodes RFC 2047 encoded words in address headers to build display names and full address strings. The Bounce/resend feature re-emits an existing message with modified envelope and headers, and in doing so it reconstructs the From line from the decoded display name. Because decode_address_list() only trimmed whitespace and did not remove C0 control characters, a display name containing CR/LF (delivered base64- or quoted-printable-encoded, e.g. =?UTF-8?B?...?=) survived decoding and could break out of the display-name context when the resent message headers were serialized, yielding arbitrary header injection (CWE-99, interpreted here as improper control of code/header content generated from untrusted input rather than classic resource injection). The upstream commit d3a35545fdaf72b02a9a4d670064895488e9d9d0 fixes this by replacing [\x00-\x1F]+ with a space before trimming, and adds a regression test (test_decode_address_list_sanitization) asserting that "Attacker\r\nX-Injected-By: test\r\nX-Pad: p" becomes a spaced, quoted display name. The flaw is a header-structure violation in the resent message, so integrity is the only impacted dimension, with scope change because the injected headers can affect systems or recipients downstream of the webmail-generated message.

Attacker is an unauthenticated email sender (PR:N) but the victim must trigger the Bounce action (UI:R, vs the input's UI:N); injected headers affect the separate outbound message (S:C) with integrity-only impact (I:L).

DescriptionCVE.org
Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a mail header injection vulnerability in the Bounce (resend) action. rcube_mime::decode_address_list() did not strip control characters from the decoded display name, so a received message whose From display-name carries CRLF sequences in an encoded word could inject arbitrary headers into the message emitted when the user bounces it. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix mail header injection via the From display-name in the Bounce (resend) action”.
