MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an already-valid credential confined to named domains - specifically a full-scope REST API key issued for named domains, or a serveradmin account assigned a domain list - which holds the manage_roles permission; the attacker invokes the REST create, update, or delete custom-role routes, and because those routes name no domain the authorization gate does not refuse them to the confined credential. Exploitation is meaningful only in a MULTI-TENANT deployment where custom roles are assigned to accounts across OTHER domains than the attacker's; a single-domain/single-tenant install cannot be affected cross-tenant. Limiting factors: authentication is mandatory (PR:L, no anonymous access), the affected versions are 6.3.4 through 6.3.6 (fixed in 6.3.7), and the damage is explicitly bounded - custom roles cannot hold administer_server, administer_domain, or manage_roles, so the confined credential cannot promote itself or anyone to server administrator. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate, authorization-layer (CWE-862) flaw in hMailServer's REST role-management routes, best understood as a multi-tenant broken-access-control issue rather than a classic remote-code or data-theft bug. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation is network-reachable (the REST API) but requires an already-valid, low-privileged credential (PR:L - an authenticated user, API key, or serveradmin confined to named domains), and the sole impact is integrity (I:H) - the attacker can rewrite, create, or delete custom roles belonging to OTHER tenants/domains, with no confidentiality (C:N) or availability (A:N) rating. The 6.5 Medium score is appropriate and not inflated: the attacker must first hold a legitimate confined credential, and the description explicitly bounds the damage - a custom role may not hold administer_server, administer_domain, or manage_roles, so this cannot be used for direct privilege escalation to full server administrator. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation - the signals that are present (Medium CVSS, integrity-only, requires authentication and a multi-tenant deployment) all point to a real priority for hosting providers running hMailServer as a multi-tenant mail platform, but a lower priority for single-tenant/single-domain installations where the cross-domain condition cannot be met. No SSVC decision data was supplied. The one point to verify: the practical blast radius (one tenant silently granting its own role full control over another tenant's mailbox permissions and settings) can be more operationally serious than the 6.5 suggests in a shared-hosting context. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In a shared-hosting hMailServer 6.3.4-6.3.6 deployment, a tenant administrator holding a credential or full-scope API key confined to their own named domains calls the REST create/update/delete role routes, which the authorization gate fails to restrict to the credential's domain scope. The attacker rewrites a custom role assigned to a different tenant - granting that role every permission over the victim tenant's mailboxes and settings, or stripping permissions it needs. No public exploit code was identified in the provided intelligence; exploitation requires an already-authenticated, domain-confined credential and a network path to the REST API. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Cross-tenant role manipulation in hMailServer 6.3.4 through 6.3.6 allows an authenticated credential confined to named domains - either a full-scope REST API key issued for those domains or a serveradmin account assigned a domain list - to create, rewrite, or delete custom roles globally through the REST role-management routes. Because those routes require manage_roles and name no domain, the authorization gate does not scope the operation to the caller's tenant, so an attacker can raise or lower the permissions of a custom role assigned to another domain's accounts; the reachable damage is bounded because custom roles cannot carry administer_server, administer_domain, or manage_roles. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and exploitation is meaningful only in multi-tenant deployments where custom roles are assigned across domains.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to hMailServer 6.3.7, the vendor-released fixed version referenced at https://gitlab.com/hmailserver/hmailserver/-/releases/v6.3.7, and review the vendor work item at https://gitlab.com/hmailserver/hmailserver/-/work_items/89 for additional details. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict REST API access to trusted management networks or disable the REST API entirely in multi-tenant deployments; this can break remote administration and automation integrations. Avoid issuing full-scope API keys or domain-limited serveradmin accounts that carry manage_roles where they are not strictly required, recognizing that removing manage_roles may impede legitimate tenant administration. Audit custom roles across all domains for unexpected permission changes and review REST API logs for create, update, or delete role calls, since those records are the primary way to detect attempted cross-tenant role manipulation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a missing-authorization flaw (CWE-862) in hMailServer's REST role-management API, tracked against CPE cpe:2.3:a:progressive_robot_ltd:hmailserver. The create, update, and delete custom-role routes are gated by the manage_roles permission, which is held by serveradmin and by full-scope API keys issued for named domains; however, because the routes themselves name no domain, the authorization gate does not refuse a credential confined to one tenant. That lets a domain-confined credential act on custom roles used by other domains, altering mailbox and settings permissions for accounts outside its scope. The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N reflects remote, authenticated, low-complexity exploitation with high integrity impact and no direct confidentiality or availability impact. The permission model limits the impact: custom roles cannot hold administer_server, administer_domain, or manage_roles, so the confined credential cannot promote itself or another account to server administrator. Affected releases are 6.3.4 through 6.3.6; the referenced vendor release v6.3.7 is the fixed version.

REST API is network-reachable (AV:N/AC:L) but needs an authenticated domain-confined credential (PR:L); impact is tampering with other tenants' role permissions (I:H) with no data disclosure (C:N) and no direct outage (A:N).

DescriptionCVE.org
Missing authorization in the REST role-management routes of Progressive Robot hMailServer 6.3.4 through 6.3.6 allows a remote authenticated user whose credential is confined to named domains to modify a custom role that accounts in other domains hold, and to create custom roles and delete any that no account holds. The routes that create, update and delete a custom role require the manage_roles permission, which only the serveradmin role holds; but a full-scope API key issued for named domains, and serveradmin assigned with a domain list, are serveradmin confined to those domains and hold manage_roles. The server's authorization gate did not refuse the three role routes to a confined credential and the route named no domain, so a credential issued to one tenant could raise or lower the permissions of a custom role assigned across other tenants - granting another domain's role every permission over its mailboxes and settings, or removing what it needs. A custom role may not hold administer_server, administer_domain or manage_roles, so the confined credential cannot make itself or another a server administrator by creating or rewriting a custom role.
