MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated ArcadeDB account with at least read-only privileges (CVSS PR:L); it is NOT remote-unauthenticated. The attacker must reach one of the exposed command APIs - HTTP, gRPC, or Bolt - which limits exposure where those interfaces are network-restricted. The specific trigger is a 'bare' ALTER TYPE edgeType WITH lightweight = true (or unique) command against an edge type; the flaw is that this schema-flag modification does not enforce the UPDATE_SCHEMA permission. Impact is limited to persistently altering edge-type lightweight/unique storage declarations - no data read, deletion, or service disruption is described. The principal limiting factor is the credential requirement; the principal aggravating factor is that no special non-default configuration is needed, so any deployment in the affected version range with low-privileged users reachable over these APIs is exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue, not a high-CVSS alarm. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) and the 5.3 score are internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable, low-complexity action requiring only an authenticated low-privileged (read-only) account, with impact limited to integrity (VI:L) and no confidentiality or availability loss. The vendor/NVD vector contains no CVSS 3.1 equivalent in the input, and no EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC reference was supplied, so the exploitation-likelihood signals are absent rather than reassuringly low. Per the data provided there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not in CISA KEV. The real-world risk is bounded by two factors the data makes clear: an attacker must already hold valid (even if read-only) credentials, and the damage is confined to persistently flipping edge-type 'lightweight' and 'unique' schema flags rather than reading data or taking down the service. The main caveat is that integrity impact on database storage declarations can be more consequential than VI:L suggests if flipping lightweight storage affects edge data retention or query correctness - verify the operational blast radius with the ArcadeData advisory (GHSA-9c7g-grf7-j2r5). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained or been granted a low-privilege, read-only ArcadeDB account connects to the database's HTTP, gRPC, or Bolt command API and issues a bare 'ALTER TYPE edgeType WITH lightweight = true' command. Because the schema-flag change is not gated by the UPDATE_SCHEMA permission, the command succeeds and persistently alters the edge storage declaration despite the user lacking schema-modification rights. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the command is trivial to reproduce from the description alone. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Read-only authenticated ArcadeDB accounts can persistently rewrite edge-type storage declarations because the ALTER TYPE schema-flag path skips the UPDATE_SCHEMA permission check, letting a low-privileged user flip 'lightweight' and 'unique' flags on edge types across releases 26.8.1 up to (but not including) 26.10.1. The command can be delivered as a bare ALTER TYPE edgeType WITH lightweight = true statement over the HTTP, gRPC, or Bolt command API and survives as a lasting schema change, so integrity of the graph model is affected while no data disclosure, deletion, or outage is described. The issue requires an authenticated account with at least read-only privileges (CVSS PR:L), is not remotely unauthenticated, and no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry is associated with it at time of analysis; a fixed release, 26.10.1, has been published by the vendor.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade ArcadeDB to 26.10.1 or later, which enforces UPDATE_SCHEMA on edge-type flag changes; the fix is described in GHSA-9c7g-grf7-j2r5 (https://github.com/ArcadeData/arcadedb/security/advisories/GHSA-9c7g-grf7-j2r5). Until upgrading, the highest-value control is exposure reduction: bind the HTTP, gRPC, and Bolt listeners to loopback or a private management network and firewall off the command ports from untrusted segments, accepting that remote application clients and drivers will lose connectivity unless routed through a trusted proxy. Where all three APIs are not needed, disable the unused gRPC and Bolt listeners and keep only the HTTP endpoint behind an authenticating reverse proxy, at the cost of breaking clients that depend on the binary protocol drivers. Additionally, audit accounts with read-only or reporting roles, remove any that are not strictly necessary, and rotate their credentials, since exploitation needs a valid low-privileged login; then review edge-type definitions (e.g. their metadata in the schema) for unexpected 'lightweight' or 'unique' flags set outside change windows and restore them, bearing in mind that reverting a 'lightweight' declaration can affect stored edge representation. Enable command/audit logging on the command APIs and alert on ALTER TYPE statements issued by read-only principals as a detection compensating control.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ArcadeDB is a multi-model graph/document database whose schema is manipulated in SQL-like DDL through the same HTTP, gRPC, and Bolt endpoints that serve queries. The ALTER TYPE statement can carry storage hints - 'lightweight' (edges stored inline without a separate record, reducing indirection) and 'unique' (constraint-like enforcement) - which are written into the type definition itself, making them durable rather than per-session. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the code path that applies these edge-type flag changes performs no UPDATE_SCHEMA permission check, unlike other schema-altering operations, so an account intended to be read-only is granted effective schema-write capability for this narrow operation. Because the bypass is implemented in the command layer rather than the transport layer, it is reachable identically over all three command APIs, and the wildcard CPE (cpe:2.3:a:arcadedata:arcadedb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) in vendor data leaves the precise legacy boundaries to the advisory's range: 26.8.1 through 26.10.0.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
ArcadeDB from 26.8.1 before 26.10.1 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows read-only users to modify edge type lightweight and unique schema flags without UPDATE_SCHEMA permission. Attackers can send a bare ALTER TYPE edgeType WITH lightweight = true command over the HTTP, gRPC, or Bolt command API to persistently alter edge storage declarations.
