| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim user who holds the mod/vpl:similarity capability (normally a teacher or grader reviewing VPL submission similarity) to open an attacker-crafted similarity/diff.php link whose filename1/filename2 parameters carry a JavaScript payload; the flaw exists because $filename was concatenated into the HTML header without encoding (fixed via s() in V5.0.0). This affects default configurations of moodle-mod_vpl before 5.0.0 - no special server-side setting is needed. Exploitation is LIMITED by mandatory user interaction (the privileged user must click the link, UI:A) and by the requirement that the victim already be authenticated with the similarity capability; impact is confined to that user's session rather than the server, and patched installations (>=5.0.0) are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 5.1 (Medium) reflects reflected XSS: the input vector states AV:N/AC:L/PR:N but UI:A (active user interaction required), with only subsequent-system low confidentiality/integrity impact (SC:L/SI:L) and no vulnerable-system impact - consistent with script execution confined to the victim's authenticated session rather than server compromise. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation signals are weak: this maps to 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The practical risk is bounded by two facts - the attacker must socially engineer a user who already holds the mod/vpl:similarity capability (typically a teacher/grader) into clicking a crafted link, and the payload runs only in that user's browser context. There is no signal conflict here; all signals consistently point to a targeted, interaction-dependent, medium-risk flaw rather than a wormable or mass-exploitable one. Key missing data: EPSS probability and independent exploit confirmation are absent, so real-world exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified beyond 'low/unknown.' The reporting by VulnCheck and the confirmed vendor patch raise confidence that the vulnerability itself is real. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a similarity/diff.php URL with a JavaScript payload embedded in the unencoded filename1/filename2 parameters and sends it to a Moodle instructor or grader. When that privileged user (holding mod/vpl:similarity) opens the link, the reflected payload executes in their session, letting the attacker perform actions or exfiltrate data under their identity. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, though the patch diff publicly reveals the exact unescaped sink. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in the VPL (Virtual Programming Lab) activity module for Moodle before 5.0.0 lets an attacker execute arbitrary JavaScript inside the browser session of a teacher or grader who holds the mod/vpl:similarity capability. The payload is delivered through the unencoded filename1/filename2 parameters of similarity/diff.php, which the plugin concatenates into the page's HTML header without escaping, so the script runs when the privileged user opens a crafted link. Because exploitation requires that user interaction and confines impact to the victim's own session rather than the Moodle server, severity is moderate (CVSS 5.1); no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fully resolved in the 5.0.0 release.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade the VPL module for Moodle to 5.0.0 or later, available from the release tag https://github.com/jcrodriguez-dis/moodle-mod_vpl/releases/tag/V5.0.0, which incorporates the fix commit 5dd7fe00df2816b692f8ea262c6fa8cdee0b26b7 that applies s() to $filename in similarity/diff.class.php. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the single-line change can be back-ported to the installed version (wrap $filename in s() inside vpl_get_similfile()), though this creates a locally maintained fork that must be reconciled at the next official release. As a compensating control, restrict the mod/vpl:similarity capability to a small, trusted set of teachers and graders - this shrinks the pool of sessions an attacker can target but does not remove the flaw and will block legitimate reviewers if applied too broadly. A web application firewall or reverse-proxy rule rejecting requests to /mod/vpl/similarity/diff.php whose filename1 or filename2 parameters contain angle brackets, quotes, or script keywords provides interim coverage, with the trade-off of possible false positives on legitimate filenames containing unusual characters and the ease of bypassing generic XSS signatures. Because exploitation is client-side and reflected, browser-side protections (Content-Security-Policy without unsafe-inline, and phishing awareness for privileged staff receiving unexpected diff.php links) reduce blast radius without addressing the root cause.

Technical ContextAI · show details
VPL is a third-party Moodle activity module (CPE cpe:2.3:a:jcrodriguez-dis:moodle-mod_vpl) written in PHP that lets instructors run and grade programming assignments, including a similarity/diff view used to compare student submissions for plagiarism detection. The flaw is a classic reflected cross-site scripting (CWE-79): in similarity/diff.class.php, the static method vpl_get_similfile() built an HTML header by directly concatenating the caller-supplied $filename value into $htmlheader before echoing it to the page, while the adjacent username parameter was already constrained with optional_param(..., PARAM_TEXT). PARAM_TEXT performs input cleaning, not output encoding, so a filename1/filename2 value containing markup or a script payload survived into the rendered HTML. The upstream fix (commit 5dd7fe00df2816b692f8ea262c6fa8cdee0b26b7) wraps the value in Moodle's s() helper, which applies HTML entity encoding at the point of output - the correct remediation pattern for this vulnerability class. Exploitation is reflected rather than stored: the payload lives only in the crafted URL the victim is induced to open.

DescriptionCVE.org
VPL (Virtual Programming Lab) for Moodle before 5.0.0 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows remote attackers to inject script via unencoded filename1/filename2 parameters in similarity/diff.php. Attackers can craft a diff.php link with a JavaScript payload that runs when a user holding mod/vpl:similarity opens it, performing actions or disclosing data under their session.
