MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated OpenCATS session at the lowest ('read') access level - the flaw is that ajax/testEmailSettings.php performed no authorization check before invoking the mail-test routine (the patch adds a required ACCESS_LEVEL_SA check). The configured SMTP relay/email settings must already be set up on the server for mail to actually be relayed. Limiting factors: authentication is mandatory (PR:L), the attacker cannot control the message body (only a fixed test message is sent), and impact is confined to sending spoofed-From mail - no data disclosure, record modification, or availability impact. Fixed in OpenCATS 0.10.0. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity issue, not a top priority. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) and the description agree: exploitation is network-reachable and low-complexity but requires an existing authenticated account (PR:L, a 'read-level' user), so this is a privilege/authorization flaw (CWE-862 missing authorization), not a pre-auth break. Impact is limited - VI:L with VC:N/VA:N reflects that the attacker can only send a fixed test message with a spoofed From address through the already-configured SMTP relay, not read data, alter records, or disrupt availability. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC decision data was supplied, and no POC is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the realistic risk is abuse of the server as a spoofed-mail/phishing or spam relay by insiders or attackers who already hold a low-privilege account. The signals are internally consistent - there is no CVSS-vs-description conflict here - but note that automatable mass exploitation is constrained by the authentication requirement. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding any low-privilege ('read-level') OpenCATS account sends a crafted AJAX request to ajax/testEmailSettings.php with attacker-chosen testEmailAddress and fromAddress parameters, causing the server to relay a test email to an arbitrary recipient with a forged sender. This lets the attacker leverage the organization's trusted, configured SMTP relay for spoofed phishing or spam. No public POC is referenced; exploitation requires a valid authenticated session (PR:L) but is otherwise low-complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
OpenCATS before 0.10.0 permits any authenticated user, including read-only accounts, to invoke ajax/testEmailSettings.php without the required site-administrator authorization and send a fixed test email through the server's configured SMTP relay with an attacker-supplied From address. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N (5.3, medium), reflecting mandatory authentication, no confidentiality or availability impact, and limited integrity impact from spoofed outbound mail; the SMTP relay must already be configured for delivery. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor-released 0.10.0 update contains the authorization fix.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 0.10.0. Upgrade to OpenCATS 0.10.0 or later; the release v0.10.0 (https://github.com/opencats/OpenCATS/releases/tag/v0.10.0) and commit aa3b414c3672f5010ca26c44192aa8e72d3735bd add the required ACCESS_LEVEL_SA authorization check in ajax/testEmailSettings.php and additional authorization checks across related AJAX endpoints. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to /ajax/testEmailSettings.php with web-server ACLs, a reverse-proxy rule, or a WAF so only site administrators can reach it; this will prevent legitimate admin email-settings testing until the rule is removed. Where the test function is not needed, disable or remove the endpoint. Additionally, constrain the SMTP relay to approved recipient domains or specific addresses and monitor outbound mail for spoofed From values; this may interfere with legitimate notification email delivery and should be scoped to the ATS relay account.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenCATS is a PHP-based applicant tracking system; ajax/testEmailSettings.php is an administrative AJAX endpoint that sends a test message using the application's stored SMTP settings and accepts testEmailAddress and fromAddress parameters. Under CWE-862 (Missing Authorization), the endpoint checked for an authenticated session but did not enforce the settings.emailSettings.POST privilege, so a user at the lowest read access level could call it. The upstream commit aa3b414c3672f5010ca26c44192aa8e72d3735bd adds a check requiring ACCESS_LEVEL_SA for this endpoint and also adds missing authorization checks to deleteActivity.php, editActivity.php, calendar event editing and deletion, import, and list-management AJAX handlers, indicating a broader authorization hardening release. Because the message body is fixed and only the recipient and From address are user-controlled, the impact is limited to relay abuse and sender spoofing rather than arbitrary content injection or data access; SMTP settings must be configured for mail to be sent.

DescriptionCVE.org
OpenCATS before 0.10.0 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in ajax/testEmailSettings.php that allows any authenticated user to send mail through the configured SMTP relay. Read-level users can supply testEmailAddress and fromAddress parameters to send the fixed test message to any recipient with a spoofed From address.
