MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the attacker can control or influence the parameter names returned by a misp-modules service (e.g., a malicious, attacker-supplied, or compromised workflow/enrichment module) - the injected payload rides in the module's parameter names, not in a user-supplied URL, so a simple crafted link is not sufficient. It further requires a victim who is an authenticated MISP user and who actively navigates to and views the affected workflow module configuration page (UI:A). Limiting factors: attacker must already have influence over the misp-modules service, the victim must be authenticated and take a specific UI action, and only MISP versions before 2.5.48 are affected; patched instances encode the label via h() and are not exploitable. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity (CVSS 4.0 base 4.8), not a top-priority, vulnerability, and the signals are internally consistent. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) describes a network-reachable but authentication- and interaction-gated reflected XSS: the attacker needs PR:L (some privilege to influence the misp-modules service) and the victim must be an authenticated user who actively views the affected page (UI:A). There is no direct confidentiality/integrity/availability impact on the MISP server itself (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N); impact is confined to the subsequent system - the victim's browser session (SC:L/SI:L). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the provided data, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The most important nuance is the unusual precondition: unlike typical reflected XSS where any attacker crafts a malicious URL, here the injection vector is the parameter names returned by the misp-modules service, meaning the attacker must already be able to control or influence that service's responses - a meaningful barrier that makes opportunistic mass exploitation unlikely and points toward targeted or chained scenarios. Net: real but modest risk, appropriately prioritized below critical/network-unauthenticated issues; patch in routine cycles. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can control or influence the parameter names reported by a misp-modules service (for example via a malicious, compromised, or attacker-supplied module) injects an HTML/JavaScript payload into a parameter name. When an authenticated MISP user opens the workflow module configuration page, the unescaped name is rendered as a raw form label and the script executes in their session, enabling session-token theft or unauthorized actions in the MISP UI. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires both the attacker's control over module parameter names and victim interaction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Reflected cross-site scripting in MISP workflow module configuration pages affects versions before 2.5.48 and allows an attacker who can influence the parameter names returned by the misp-modules service to inject HTML or JavaScript into form labels viewed by an authenticated MISP user. Exploitation requires influence over the module service plus a victim who actively opens the affected workflow module page, so a crafted link alone is insufficient; the issue is medium severity (CVSS 4.0 base 4.8) and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis. MISP 2.5.48 encodes the generated label with h() and removes the injection path.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later; the vendor fix is commit 813a48b2b (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/813a48b2b), which HTML-encodes workflow module parameter labels with h(). If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict workflow module configuration to trusted administrators, connect MISP only to a trusted or internally controlled misp-modules service, and review module metadata for unexpected parameter names before use; these reduce exposure but do not remove the underlying output-encoding flaw. Disabling or not using the workflow module interface removes the attack surface at the cost of losing automated workflow functionality, and network-isolating the misp-modules service limits who can influence its responses but may break legitimate enrichment integrations.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP is a PHP/CakePHP threat intelligence sharing platform whose workflow subsystem consumes module metadata from the separate misp-modules service. In app/Model/WorkflowModules/Module_misp_module.php, the translateParams() method derives form field labels from parameter names returned by that service using Inflector::humanize($paramName) and previously emitted the result directly into HTML label elements. Because the label was not passed through CakePHP's h() escaping helper, parameter names containing HTML or JavaScript syntax were rendered as live markup, producing a CWE-79 reflected cross-site scripting condition. The fix in commit 813a48b2b changes the assignment to h(Inflector::humanize($paramName)). The supplied CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the MISP application before 2.5.48. The attack surface is the module metadata channel rather than a normal user-supplied request parameter: an attacker must control, supply, or compromise the misp-modules service's parameter names, and the victim must be authenticated and view the workflow module configuration page.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the workflow module interface. Parameter names returned by the misp-modules service are rendered as raw HTML form labels on the workflow module page without output encoding. An attacker who can influence the parameter names reported by the misp-modules service can inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript that executes in the context of an authenticated MISP user's browser.
Preconditions:
- The attacker must be able to control or influence parameter names reported by the misp-modules service.
- A victim must be authenticated and view the affected workflow module page.
Impact:
- Execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's browser session.
- Potential theft of session tokens, manipulation of the MISP interface, or initiation of unauthorized actions on behalf of the victim.
Affected versions: <2.5.48.
