MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid, authenticated MISP account that is a member of at least one sharing group, and that sharing group must be attached to the target attribute or object. Under those conditions the user can view proposals on attributes/objects carrying that sharing group regardless of the attribute's distribution level (levels 1-3 should have restricted visibility). Limiting factors: no anonymous/unauthenticated access is possible (authenticated per PR:L), the attacker must specifically share a group with the targeted data, and the impact is read-only disclosure of proposal data with no write/modify capability. A secondary functional bug (the owning organisation being unable to see proposals on its own org-only attributes) is a usability/availability-of-data regression, not an attacker-exploitable confidentiality issue. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue rather than an urgent one. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N, score 7.1) shows network reachability and low attack complexity, but critically requires PR:L - the attacker must already be an authenticated MISP user who belongs to a sharing group attached to the target data. Impact is confidentiality-only (VC:H, with VI/VA:N), consistent with CWE-862 missing authorization: it leaks proposal data, it does not let an attacker modify or destroy anything. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so by the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation. The realistic threat model is a malicious or curious insider (a legitimate sharing-group member) seeing proposals they should not, not mass internet exploitation. One note of divergence: the vendor rated confidentiality VC:H, but the disclosure is scoped to proposals (shadow attributes) on attributes/objects already within the user's sharing groups, which reads closer to a limited/partial disclosure than a total confidentiality loss - this is a judgment call worth verifying against the data sensitivity of a given MISP instance. Overall: patch on a normal cadence; prioritize higher only for instances with untrusted or large sharing-group memberships. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated MISP user who is a member of a sharing group browses or queries proposals (shadow attributes) on attributes or objects carrying that sharing group. Because the authorization check validated sharing-group membership without checking the attribute's distribution level, the user is shown proposed attribute changes that distribution levels 1-3 should have hidden from them. No public exploit code is identified; exploitation requires only a valid account and normal application use. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
MISP before 2.5.48 discloses proposal (shadow attribute) records to authenticated users whose sharing group is attached to the target attribute or object, because the visibility logic accepted any matching sharing group without confirming that the attribute was actually distributed at sharing-group level. The exposure is read-only - an attacker learns proposed attribute changes they should not see - and requires a valid MISP account plus an existing sharing-group overlap with the targeted data; a separate defect also blocked the owning organisation from viewing proposals on its own org-only attributes. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a patch in 2.5.48 (commit 9c5af321f).
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to 2.5.48 or later; this is the vendor-released patch and it is the only complete fix, since the flaw is in the SQL condition builder rather than in configuration. If upgrade cannot be done immediately, audit sharing-group membership and stop attaching sharing groups to attributes or objects whose distribution is 0-3, because any such attachment is precisely what the broken predicate keys on; the trade-off is that legitimate sharing-group collaboration must be temporarily modelled through community/connected-community distribution or restricted to level-4 attributes only. Additionally, review which accounts belong to sharing groups that touch sensitive proposal data and remove unnecessary members, accepting reduced collaboration breadth as the cost. Detection is difficult from logs alone, so treat any prior presence of low-distribution attributes carrying a sharing_group_id as potential exposure and review proposal access records. Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence sharing platform whose data model assigns every attribute and object a distribution level: 0 (own organisation only), 1 (community), 2 (connected communities), 3 (all communities) and 4 (sharing group). Access filtering is built as SQL conditions in model methods such as ShadowAttribute::buildConditions(), which uses correlatedLookup() subqueries against the objects table to translate object-level metadata into attribute-level filters. The vulnerable code added a sharing-group predicate whenever the user belonged to a sharing group, but never conjoined it with a distribution = 4 test, so the sharing-group branch effectively overrode the stricter distribution levels 1-3. This is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): an authorization decision on a data-read path was incomplete rather than absent, letting a legitimate authenticated user (CVSS PR:L) read shadow-attribute proposals outside their intended audience. The fix wraps the object and attribute sharing-group predicates in AND blocks that additionally require distribution = 4, and adds an Event.org_id = user org_id clause so owning organisations regain visibility of proposals on their own org-only attributes.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains an access control flaw in the proposal (shadow attribute) visibility logic. The authorization check accepted any attribute or object carrying one of the user's sharing groups without verifying the distribution level, and denied the owning organisation access to proposals on its own organisation-only attributes.
- A user belonging to a sharing group could view proposals on attributes or objects with that sharing group, regardless of the attribute's distribution level (levels 1-3 should restrict visibility)
- The owning organisation could not view proposals on its own org-only attributes
Security impact: Unauthorized disclosure of proposed attribute changes to users who should not have access based on distribution level restrictions.
Affected: <2.5.48
Executive ViewAI
MISP threat-intelligence platforms running versions earlier than 2.5.48 can expose proposed attribute changes - indicators and context not yet approved for wider circulation - to accounts outside the intended audience. Exposure is confined to users who already hold a valid MISP login and share a sharing group with the targeted data, and the flaw is read-only, so records cannot be altered or deleted. Leadership should care because MISP instances typically concentrate the organisation's most sensitive indicators, and early disclosure of pending proposals can reveal investigative priorities or tip off the adversaries being tracked.
