MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation targets the specific endpoint GET /api/public/preview/{attachmentId}, which is exposed without authentication in SurveyKing versions before 1.13.0 because FileServiceImpl.loadFile does not enforce shared, owner, or project authorization. The key LIMITING factor is that there is no file-listing capability, so an attacker must know or derive valid file identifiers; these are snowflake IDs that are time-ordered and thus partially predictable (reflected as AC:H/AT:P in the CVSS 4.0 vector), which raises exploitation difficulty for a specific targeted file. No authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is required - the endpoint is public by design - but successful retrieval depends on resolving a valid attachment ID and on the instance being network-reachable. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditionally-gated confidentiality risk rather than a mass-exploitation emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H) and the 8.2 score correctly capture the core tension: the endpoint is network-reachable and fully unauthenticated (PR:N/UI:N), but exploitation is NOT trivial because AC:H and AT:P reflect the real precondition that an attacker must know or derive time-ordered snowflake file IDs to pull a specific attachment, since there is no listing primitive. Impact is confidentiality-only (VI:N/VA:N) - the flaw reads files, it does not modify or deny. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no vendor/CISA claim of active exploitation in the provided data, so there is no evidence of in-the-wild use. A third-party technical write-up (hackmd) and a VulnCheck advisory document the mechanism, which raises the practical likelihood that working exploitation will appear even though no packaged exploit is indicated in the input. Net: prioritize patching for anyone running SurveyKing with sensitive respondent uploads, but this is a targeted/opportunistic data-read issue, not a wormable RCE; the AC:H/AT:P snowflake-ID requirement is the main brake on real-world risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker enumerates or predicts snowflake attachment IDs (which are time-ordered and therefore partially guessable) and issues GET /api/public/preview/{attachmentId} requests against an internet-facing SurveyKing instance, retrieving private survey attachments and respondent file uploads without any login. Because FileServiceImpl.loadFile omits the shared/owner/project authorization checks, each valid ID returns the file directly. A public technical write-up describes the technique, though no packaged exploit tool is indicated in the input; the main difficulty is the AC:H/AT:P requirement to derive valid IDs. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026
Unauthenticated stored-file disclosure in SurveyKing before 1.13.0 lets remote attackers download arbitrary attachments by calling GET /api/public/preview/{attachmentId}, bypassing the shared, owner, and project authorization checks that FileServiceImpl.loadFile is supposed to enforce. No authentication (PR:N), user interaction, or non-default configuration is required - the endpoint is public by design - but there is no file-listing capability, so success depends on knowing or deriving a valid snowflake attachment ID, which is time-ordered and only partially predictable (reflected in the assessed AC:H/AT:P). The result is a genuine but conditionally gated confidentiality risk rather than a mass-exploitation emergency: no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, though a vendor patch exists and the exposure is high-severity (CVSS 4.0 8.2; CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).
RemediationAI
Upgrade SurveyKing to 1.13.0 or later - the release in which the missing authorization check in FileServiceImpl.loadFile is corrected - using the upstream fix referenced by commit 9489171d53e55ace2856a91af38034665c0064a4 (https://github.com/javahuang/SurveyKing/commit/9489171d53e55ace2856a91af38034665c0064a4) and confirming the build against the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/surveyking-before-1.13.0-unauthenticated-file-download-via-api-public-preview). Until the upgrade can be staged, the most effective compensating control is to deny unauthenticated access to the preview route at the reverse proxy or WAF - block or require authentication for GET /api/public/preview/* - accepting the trade-off that legitimately public preview links for shared surveys and respondent-facing attachments will stop resolving for anonymous users. Alternatively, restrict the whole instance to trusted networks/VPN or an authenticated identity-aware proxy if the deployment is not meant to be internet-facing, with the trade-off of losing anonymous survey distribution entirely. Because exploitation hinges on guessing time-ordered snowflake IDs, reducing the predictability of attachment identifiers or adding rate limiting and anomaly alerting on repeated /api/public/preview/{id} requests that return 200 for distinct IDs can raise detection and slow enumeration without fully closing the gap. General hardening from the same release train - replacing the default admin credentials with a strong 8-16 character mixed-case alphanumeric password and updating any documentation-based defaults - is recommended but is not a substitute for the authorization fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
SurveyKing (vendor namespace javahuang, CPE cpe:2.3:a:javahuang:surveyking:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a Java/Spring Boot survey platform whose server exposes a REST API used by both authenticated admin/authoring functions and deliberately public survey-taking functions. The vulnerable route is GET /api/public/preview/{attachmentId}, defined around lines 99-107 of server/api/src/main/java/cn/surveyking/server/api/SurveyApi.java, which delegates to FileServiceImpl.loadFile (lines 197-228 of server/rdbms/src/main/java/cn/surveyking/server/impl/FileServiceImpl.java). The root-cause class is CWE-862 Missing Authorization: loadFile returns the stored file object without evaluating whether the requester is the file owner, a member of the owning project/shared scope, or otherwise entitled to the attachment. Attachment identifiers are Snowflake-style, time-ordered 64-bit values, so although they are not enumerable in a cheap 1..N sense, an attacker who understands the generation timestamp and node/sequence layout can narrow the search space and guess IDs corresponding to files uploaded around a known time - the probabilistic nature of that inference is what drives the High attack complexity in the assessed vector. The advisory references include the upstream fixing commit 9489171d53e55ace2856a91af38034665c0064a4; note that the publicly surfaced diff for that commit primarily touches unrelated AI-chat/locale plumbing and default-credential documentation, so the authorization fix should be validated against the 1.13.0 release rather than inferred from the visible hunks.

DescriptionCVE.org
SurveyKing before 1.13.0 contains a missing authorization vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to download any stored file by id through GET /api/public/preview/{attachmentId}. Attackers who know or derive time-ordered snowflake file ids can bypass shared, owner, and project checks in FileServiceImpl.loadFile to read private survey attachments and respondent uploads.
Executive ViewAI
SurveyKing deployments before 1.13.0 expose stored attachments to unauthenticated remote retrieval, creating a confidentiality risk for files uploaded to the platform. Exploitation is conditionally gated by the need to know or derive valid attachment identifiers, and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the high severity and public endpoint make this a priority for organizations using SurveyKing for sensitive surveys, HR, legal, or customer data. Leadership should care because unauthorized disclosure could trigger privacy, contractual, or regulatory consequences and erode customer trust.
