Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a specific non-default configuration and a privileged human action, which together strongly limit realistic risk: (1) the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' option must be enabled in the FV Flowplayer settings; (2) the attacker-submitted comment contains a crafted [fvplayer] or [flowplayer] shortcode whose 'ad', 'popup', or 'end_action_value' attribute holds malicious HTML, with whitespace smuggled as HTML entities to survive attribute parsing; (3) a site administrator must manually approve/publish that comment; and (4) payload execution only fires for a visitor who actively interacts with the video player on the affected page. The attacker needs no account (guest commenter), but the mandatory admin-approval step and non-default setting are the dominant limiting factors beyond the raw CVSS score.

Impact

Signals point to a genuine but moderate-priority issue rather than an urgent one. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 5.4 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - network-reachable and nominally unauthenticated (PR:N), but with high attack complexity. Critically, PR:N captures only that the comment-submitting attacker needs no account; it does NOT capture the description's hard gating conditions, which materially lower real-world risk: the non-default 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' option must be enabled AND a site administrator must manually approve the malicious comment before any payload can be stored. This is a conflict worth flagging explicitly - the 'unauthenticated' framing overstates practical exploitability because a human admin approval step sits in the attack path. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so statistical exploitation likelihood cannot be weighed. There is no CISA KEV listing and no confirmed public exploit code; the only code artifacts are the vendor fix commit and plugin source references, not weaponized PoCs. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (routine patch cadence), not act_now or emergency, which is consistent with the multiple preconditions and partial (C:L/I:L) impact. On an SSVC-style read: technical impact is partial, and the attack is not automatable because it depends on a non-default setting plus manual admin approval. Net: a real, patch-worthy stored XSS, but closer to a targeted/opportunistic low-to-moderate risk than a widespread emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a site running FV Flowplayer with the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' option enabled, an unauthenticated visitor submits a blog comment containing a crafted [fvplayer]/[flowplayer] shortcode whose 'ad', 'popup', or 'end_action_value' attribute carries HTML/script, smuggling spaces as HTML entities to evade filtering. Because the AC:H conditions require the attacker to clear a manual gate, a site administrator must approve that comment; once approved, the attribute value is html_entity_decode()'d and emitted as raw HTML, so the script executes in the browser of any visitor who interacts with the video player on that page. No confirmed public exploit code is identified at time of analysis - only the vendor's fix commit is public.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the FV Flowplayer Video Player WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 7.5.55.7212, lets unauthenticated commenters place malicious HTML inside the 'ad', 'popup', or 'end_action_value' attributes of an [fvplayer] or [flowplayer] shortcode, which the plugin later decodes and renders as raw markup. Execution requires the non-default 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' option to be enabled, a site administrator to approve the crafted comment, and a visitor to interact with the player on the affected page; the assessed CVSS is 5.4 with AC:H and UI:R. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, with no CISA KEV entry or confirmed working PoC in the supplied data.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (commit 62aaa66a560923a4ba75f5d0a557744599345d35); a released patched plugin version is not independently confirmed from the supplied data, so apply the update containing that commit when available. The commit strips the ad, popup, and end_action_value attributes from [fvplayer] and [flowplayer] shortcodes in comments. If an immediate update is not possible, disable the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' option to remove the required precondition, with the trade-off that Vimeo and YouTube URL parsing stops working, and avoid approving comments that contain FV Player shortcodes or HTML-entity-obfuscated attribute values. Comment moderation alone is not a complete fix because an administrator may approve a crafted comment. Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation, in the plugin's frontend rendering path. WordPress comments are an unauthenticated input surface, and FV Player shortcode attributes are parsed so that values for ad, popup, and end_action_value are passed through html_entity_decode() and embedded raw into player output. Whitespace encoded as HTML entities survives shortcode attribute parsing and is decoded into markup, allowing script injection. The vendor fix in commit 62aaa66a560923a4ba75f5d0a557744599345d35 adds fv_player_comment_text_strip_html_attributes() to remove those attributes from [fvplayer] and [flowplayer] shortcodes found in untrusted content while leaving administrator-configured ad and popup HTML untouched. The CPE data identifies foliovision:fv_flowplayer_video_player as the affected component, and the trigger path depends on the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' setting being enabled.

DescriptionCVE.org

The FV Flowplayer Video Player plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.5.55.7212 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' option to be enabled and a site administrator to approve the comment containing the malicious shortcode; execution is then triggered for any visitor who interacts with the video player on that page.
