MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated session on the target ERPNext site, but critically the account needs no operational role - any logged-in user suffices (PR:L). The concrete prerequisite is access to the affected record-creation endpoint, which derives the record doctype from the request and performs the insert with permission checks disabled; the attacker simply supplies a privileged record type (e.g., a User or role-assignment document). No user interaction, no non-default configuration, and no special feature toggle are described as required - the flawed behavior is present in default affected versions. The principal limiting factors are therefore the need for a valid login (which is low where self-registration or many internal users exist) and that the deployment must run an affected version (before 15.111.0, or 16.x before 16.22.0). |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated high-CVSS score. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack needing only low privileges and no user interaction, with HIGH impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) - consistent with the description's claim of full site takeover via creation of privileged accounts. The PR:L requirement is the main mitigating signal, but the description weakens even that: 'any authenticated user, including one holding no operational role' can exploit it, so the effective privilege bar is merely a valid login, which is low for multi-tenant or self-registration-enabled ERPNext deployments. No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis; this absence should not be read as low risk given the trivial exploit mechanics. Signals are mutually consistent (no conflicts between CVSS and description). The CVSS 4.0 vector is vendor/VulnCheck-supplied rather than independently reproduced; CVSS 3.1 metrics and SSVC/automatable data were not provided. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with any low-privilege authenticated ERPNext account (or one obtained via open registration) sends a crafted request to the record-creation endpoint, specifying a privileged record type (such as a User/role-granting document) that the endpoint inserts with permission checks disabled. This creates a new administrative account, giving the attacker full control of the site. No public POC was provided in the input, but the described mechanism requires no special tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Privilege escalation in Frappe ERPNext lets any authenticated user - including one holding no operational role - create privileged records such as user accounts and role assignments, ultimately taking full control of the site. The flaw affects releases before 15.111.0 and 16.x before 16.22.0, and stems from a record-creation endpoint that derives the record type from the request and inserts it with permission checks disabled; the only prerequisite is a valid login (CVSS 4.0 vector PR:L, i.e. authenticated, no user interaction, no non-default configuration). Rated 8.7 with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact across the vulnerable site, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ERPNext 15.111.0 (15.x line) or 16.22.0 (16.x line), as documented in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-x635-wr4c-7345; these are the first fixed releases and no backport to earlier branches is indicated in the available data. If immediate upgrading is not feasible, compensating controls must target the authenticated attack surface: restrict who can hold a login on the site - disable open self-registration, audit and deactivate dormant or vendor accounts, and where possible enforce SSO/allowlisting so that only vetted internal identities can authenticate - accepting that this shrinks but does not eliminate exposure since any legitimate low-privilege user remains a viable attacker (PR:L) and the endpoint stays reachable. Because the endpoint is invoked through normal authenticated application traffic rather than a distinct network port, firewall or port blocking is not an effective mitigation. Detection-focused controls should be layered on as a stopgap with the trade-off of alert latency: enable and centrally ship ERPNext/Frappe audit and access logs, alert on creation of User, Role, role-assignment and permission-rule documents by accounts without administrative roles, and alert on bulk or out-of-hours record creation; reduce log retention reliance only after patching. Review existing user and role records for unauthorized privileged accounts created before remediation, and rotate credentials plus invalidate sessions for any accounts that may have been leveraged.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ERPNext is an open-source ERP built on the Frappe Framework, a Python/JavaScript meta-framework in which every piece of data is modeled as a DocType and authorization is enforced by doctype-level permission rules. The vulnerability is a CWE-269 improper privilege management flaw: a record-creation endpoint accepts the target record type directly from the request body and then performs the insert with permission checks disabled (the framework's ignore-permissions code path), so the caller's own privileges are never evaluated against the doctype being written. Because the framework's entire access-control model is doctype and role driven, bypassing that check on a single insert path is sufficient to write privileged documents - for example User records or role-assignment documents - and thereby elevate from an ordinary authenticated session to administrative control. The CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:frappe:erpnext:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the affected component is ERPNext itself rather than an optional third-party module, and the flawed behavior is present in default affected versions with no special feature toggle required.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Frappe ERPNext before 15.111.0 and 16.x before 16.22.0 contains a privilege escalation vulnerability in a record-creation endpoint that takes the record type from the request and inserts the record with permission checks disabled. Any authenticated user, including one holding no operational role, can supply a privileged record type to create privileged accounts and take full control of the site.
Technical POC Analysis
Evidence caveat: the advisory itself lists "No known CVE" and rates the issue Critical 9.9 (CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Executive ViewAI
Frappe ERPNext, the ERP platform that many organizations rely on for finance, HR, procurement and inventory records, contains a privilege-escalation flaw that allows any user with a valid login - including one holding no operational role - to create administrator-level accounts and assign themselves privileged roles, gaining full control of the site and everything it holds. Because the only prerequisite is ordinary authenticated access, every employee, contractor and partner account becomes a potential entry point into the system of record, and the affected data carries high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact. With no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, leadership should treat this as an elevated, organization-wide exposure of core business systems rather than a routine defect.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict network reachability of affected ERPNext instances to trusted networks or VPN; require MFA and re-verify all existing accounts; remove unnecessary roles and minimize the number of valid logins; block or tightly filter record-creation and user/role-management requests at the reverse proxy or WAF; enable and continuously monitor audit logging for User creation and role assignment (with alerting); review logs retroactively for indicators of abuse. The vendor designates 15.111.0 and 16.22.0 as the fixed releases for remediation planning.
