| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target application to accept and process attacker-supplied JNG (JPEG Network Graphics) files through ImageMagick's JNG decoder in coders/png.c (vulnerable builds before 6.9.13-57, or 7.x before 7.1.2-32). The specific trigger is JNG input whose DestroyJNG path fails to relinquish the unique temporary files created for the color and alpha sub-images. Meaningful impact is LIMITED by its cumulative nature: a single file leaks only a small amount of disk, so an attacker must submit many crafted files repeatedly to exhaust the filesystem, and impact depends on available disk headroom and temp-directory quotas. The vector is only truly remote/unauthenticated where an internet- or user-facing feature routes uploads into ImageMagick; batch or offline-only usage reduces this to local/config-dependent exposure. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity availability issue, not a top-tier emergency. The vendor-supplied CVSS:4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated, no-interaction triggering, but the only impact is VA:L - a low availability hit via gradual disk exhaustion from leaked temporary files (CWE-459, incomplete cleanup). Confidentiality and integrity impacts are explicitly N, so despite the 'Information Disclosure' tag in the input, no data exposure occurs - the tag conflicts with both the description and the CVSS vector and should be disregarded (data is leaked to disk as orphaned temp files, not disclosed to the attacker). No EPSS score was provided, the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and no POC was supplied, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The score of 6.9 is driven by easy remote reachability rather than impact magnitude; the practical risk is a slow denial-of-service requiring sustained repeated submissions to meaningfully consume disk, making this a patch-on-normal-cycle item rather than an exploited-in-the-wild priority. Note the apparent scope mismatch is minor: AV:N is justified only when the application exposes ImageMagick-backed image processing to untrusted input; in offline/batch-only deployments the realistic vector is closer to local. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker repeatedly uploads crafted JNG files to a web application that uses ImageMagick for server-side image processing (e.g., avatar or attachment handling). Each decode leaves orphaned temporary files for the color and alpha sub-images that are never relinquished, so sustained submissions steadily consume disk space until the filesystem fills and the service degrades or fails. No public exploit code was provided, and no authentication or user interaction is required where the processing endpoint is reachable. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Repeated processing of attacker-supplied JNG images by ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57, or 7.x before 7.1.2-32, leaves temporary files on disk, letting unauthenticated remote attackers gradually exhaust storage and degrade service availability. The effect is cumulative rather than immediate: a single crafted file leaks only a small amount of disk, so meaningful impact requires many submissions and depends on the host's free space and temporary-directory quotas. Vendor patches exist for both release lines (6.9.13-57 and 7.1.2-32), and no public exploit code or confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV) status was identified at time of analysis; the CVSS 4.0 score of 6.9 reflects low availability impact only, with no confidentiality or integrity effect.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to ImageMagick 6.9.13-57 or 7.1.2-32 (or later), which contain the DestroyJNG cleanup fix; the corresponding upstream commits are b2d579d20cc503185b6e8b0bc2dfb520b7bce58a (7.x) and 3875281ca0c5aa67b2bf0454725abf177c706b3b (6.x), and details are in advisory https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-f983-243h-9x4r. Where upgrading immediately is not feasible, restrict or disable the JNG coder through a policy.xml entry such as <policy domain="coder" rights="none" pattern="JNG"/> - the trade-off is that legitimate JNG and MNG inputs will be refused, so validate this against your input corpus first. Additionally, point temporary storage at a dedicated, quota-bounded filesystem via the MAGICK_TEMPORARY_PATH environment variable or the registry:temporary-path define so that leaked files cannot fill the root volume, and monitor that directory for accumulating orphaned temporaries so that a slow leak is detected before it causes an outage. Rate-limiting or otherwise capping the volume of untrusted image submissions per client reduces the achievable leak rate, and periodic cleanup of stale temporary files bounds the damage from any already-orphaned artifacts; note that none of these compensating controls fix the leak itself, they only contain its blast radius.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-459 (Incomplete Cleanup) in the JNG decoder implemented in ImageMagick's coders/png.c. JNG (JPEG Network Graphics) is a MNG-family format that carries a JPEG-compressed color sub-image plus an optional alpha sub-image; when ImageMagick decodes one, it materializes those components as unique temporary files allocated through AcquireUniqueFileResource. In the vulnerable code path, the DestroyJNG routine frees the in-memory image structures but fails to call RelinquishUniqueFileResource on the sub-image filenames, so the on-disk temporaries are orphaned on every decode. The upstream fixes (commit b2d579d20cc503185b6e8b0bc2dfb520b7bce58a for the 7.x line and 3875281ca0c5aa67b2bf0454725abf177c706b3b for the 6.x line) add an explicit filename check and relinquish call for both the color and alpha images in DestroyJNG. The same 7.x commit also touches PerlMagick/Magick.xs and quantum.xs.in, but those changes are the unrelated MagickPI constant definition; the security-relevant change is confined to coders/png.c. This is a pure resource-management defect: there is no memory corruption, no path traversal, and no code execution primitive, so exploitation is limited to disk-space consumption on hosts whose pipeline feeds untrusted JNG files into ImageMagick.

DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains an incomplete cleanup flaw in the JNG decoder that fails to remove temporary files when processing crafted input. Attackers can submit crafted JNG files for processing to repeatedly leak temporary files, consuming disk space and degrading availability.
