Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a site administrator has configured a custom user attribute (e.g. hp_custom_link) with a display_format template that places the %value% token inside an href, src, or style HTML attribute context - a documented but non-default use of the plugin's attribute display feature. Given that precondition, an unauthenticated attacker (PR:N) can inject the payload via the attribute value with no user interaction to store it, and the script fires when any user views a page rendering the attribute. The primary limiting factor is that configuration: sites without a custom user attribute rendering %value% into an href/src/style context are not exploitable, which substantially reduces the realistic affected population despite the network, unauthenticated vector.

Impact

This is a stored XSS (CWE-79) in the HivePress WordPress plugin, reported and triaged by Wordfence with a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.2 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). The vector's PR:N indicates an unauthenticated attacker and S:C reflects the cross-context execution typical of XSS, which is what elevates this from a Medium to a High score. However, the signals are mixed on real-world urgency: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation. Most importantly, the description states a hard precondition that the CVSS AC:L does not capture: an administrator must have configured a custom user attribute whose display_format template places the %value% token inside an href/src/style attribute context. This operator-dependent, non-default configuration meaningfully narrows the real attack surface, so despite the 7.2/High rating this is better characterized as a conditional High rather than a universally exploitable flaw - I assess AC:H to reflect that precondition (see assessed vector). Net: a legitimate issue worth patching, but lower practical priority than its score suggests for sites not using that attribute-display configuration.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a HivePress site where an admin has configured a custom user attribute (e.g. hp_custom_link) whose display template renders the %value% token inside an href, src, or style attribute, an unauthenticated attacker populates that attribute via their user profile with a crafted value that breaks out of the attribute context. When any visitor or administrator views a page displaying that attribute, the injected script executes in their browser session. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but exploitation is straightforward once the vulnerable attribute configuration exists.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the HivePress Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads plugin for WordPress (all versions up to and including 1.7.32) allows unauthenticated attackers to persist arbitrary JavaScript that executes whenever a user views a page rendering an affected custom user attribute. The published CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.2 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N); our assessment retains that score but raises attack complexity to High (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) because exploitation depends on a site administrator having configured a custom user attribute whose display_format template places the %value% token inside an href, src, or style attribute context - a documented but non-default use of the plugin's attribute display feature. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and although an upstream fix has been merged (PR #375 / changeset 3747070), the realistic affected population is limited to sites with such an attribute template already in place.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. The vendor merged hardening for this issue in GitHub PR #375 (commit 60df383473ff4b7a85f24b06895ec236edf20c9d) and the corresponding Trac changeset 3747070 touches includes/fields/class-field.php, so upgrade HivePress as soon as a tagged release incorporating that changeset is published and confirm the fixed version in the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/d2c3752b-0d2f-402d-bdbf-fb3fd76cf558?source=cve. Until a tagged patched release is verified, the highest-value compensating control is configuration-level: audit every custom user attribute's display_format template and remove or rewrite any %value% token that sits inside an href, src, or style attribute (for example the hp_custom_link attribute) so the value is only rendered in an HTML text context - the trade-off is that link/embedded-media styling produced by those templates stops working. Where a link must remain, render the value through an allowlist-based URL validator/scheme check rather than raw interpolation. The upstream patch also hardens adjacent surfaces by restricting meta-field assignment (map_meta_cap callback) and tightening taxonomy term assignment capabilities (assign_terms set to edit_others_posts), so applying the full PR rather than only the escaping hunk is preferable. Note that patching the plugin does not clean already-stored malicious attribute values; review and remove suspicious user attribute data after upgrading. Blocking untrusted users from creating or editing user accounts/attributes adds defense in depth but does not address payloads already persisted.

Technical ContextAI · show details

HivePress implements a generic attribute framework for WordPress: administrators define custom fields (e.g. a user attribute with slug such as hp_custom_link) and provide a display_format template in which the %value% token is substituted with the stored attribute value at render time. The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation): the value is sanitized/escaped for an HTML text context but not for HTML attribute contexts, so when %value% is placed inside href, src, or style, injected characters can break out and introduce script-bearing markup or URL schemes. The vulnerable logic lives in the plugin's field and attribute rendering classes - referenced code paths include includes/fields/class-text.php (lines ~197 and ~214), includes/fields/class-field.php (~572), includes/components/class-attribute.php (~1199 and ~1293), and includes/controllers/class-user.php (~292), all at tag 1.7.32. Stored data is written through the user attribute flow, so a payload submitted by an unauthenticated user is persisted and later rendered to other visitors.

DescriptionCVE.org

The HivePress - Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the '<custom user attribute slug> (e.g. hp_custom_link)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.7.32 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that an administrator has configured a custom user attribute with a display_format template placing the %value% token inside an href, src, or style attribute context, which is a documented and expected use of the plugin's attribute display feature.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

HivePress Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads plugin for WordPress (all versions up to and including 1.7.32) is affected by a high-severity stored cross-site scripting flaw that can let unauthenticated attackers persist malicious JavaScript on pages viewed by site visitors. Organizations using this plugin with custom user-attribute display templates that place the %value% token inside an href, src, or style context are exposed to visitor session theft, credential compromise, or site defacement, which can harm customer trust and create compliance risk. Because no vendor-released patch is identified and the vulnerable configuration is non-default, leadership should direct immediate discovery and mitigation of affected WordPress sites.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include disabling or reconfiguring custom user attribute display templates that place the %value% token in href, src, or style contexts, restricting attribute creation and editing to trusted administrators, sanitizing or encoding attribute output, deploying WAF rules to detect and block stored XSS payloads, auditing and removing any persisted malicious JavaScript from the database, and monitoring for suspicious user profile changes. If an official vendor patch becomes available from the upstream fix (PR #375 / changeset 3747070), apply it immediately.
