Exploitation Conditions

No special conditions beyond network reachability - the flaw is a missing access check in ossn_album_page_handler for the album/getphoto and album/getcover routes, exploitable by unauthenticated attackers against default OSSN installations through version 10.1 (CWE-862). The only real prerequisites are: (1) the attacker can reach the OSSN web instance over the network, and (2) the attacker enumerates sequential, guessable file GUIDs to locate target files. Limiting factors are minimal: no authentication, no user interaction, and no non-default configuration are required, though impact is confined to reading stored photos/files (confidentiality), not modification or service disruption.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority information-disclosure issue rather than a critical system-compromise flaw. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation requiring no user interaction, which is why the base score lands at 6.9 (Medium). Crucially, impact is limited to confidentiality only (VC:L, with VI:N/VA:N and no subsequent-system impact SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) - an attacker reads stored album photos and files but cannot modify data or affect availability. A public exploit exists (publicly available exploit code exists), which raises practical likelihood, but the vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active, widespread exploitation - treat the POC as a capability signal, not confirmation of in-the-wild attacks. The sequential-GUID enumeration design makes mass scraping of a given instance trivial once an attacker finds it, but the overall priority is tempered by the Low confidentiality impact and the niche deployment footprint of OSSN. Reporting is attributed to VulnCheck with a vendor patch available. Missing signals: no EPSS and no KEV data were supplied - their absence is expected for a recently published CVE and should not be read as low risk by itself.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker sends crafted requests to album/getphoto and album/getcover and iterates sequential file GUIDs, retrieving friends-only album photos and other stored files that should be access-restricted, with no login required. Because public exploit code is already available (per the referenced hackmd write-up) and complexity is low, an attacker can script bulk enumeration to scrape an entire instance's private media. The practical limit is that the attacker must be able to reach the OSSN instance over the network and must iterate GUIDs to discover valid files.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Unauthenticated file disclosure in Open Source Social Network (OSSN) through version 10.1 lets remote attackers download stored album photos and other uploaded files by directly requesting the album/getphoto and album/getcover routes, which perform no authorization check. Because OSSN assigns object and file GUIDs sequentially, an attacker can simply walk the numeric ID space to reach friends-only album photos and files belonging to other users without ever logging in. Publicly available exploit code exists (a HackMD write-up documents the technique), and the issue rates a moderate CVSS of 6.9 (v4.0) with confidentiality-only impact (no modification or denial of service); there is no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV). The vendor has published an upstream fix commit, but a released patched version beyond 10.1 has not been independently confirmed.

RemediationAI

Upstream fix available (commit cb7c24e70f8c4470ee485caac4889885d2e120b3); released patched version not independently confirmed, so apply that commit to components/OssnPhotos/ossn_com.php or upgrade as soon as a tagged release beyond 10.1 is published (track https://github.com/opensource-socialnetwork/opensource-socialnetwork and issue 2641). Until then, the most direct compensating control is to gate the routes at the reverse proxy or WAF: deny or challenge all unauthenticated requests to /album/getphoto and /album/getcover and require a valid OSSN session cookie - the trade-off is that a naive block can break legitimate thumbnail and cover-image delivery for logged-in users, so scope the rule so it only rejects requests lacking a session. If the OssnPhotos component is not needed, disabling it removes the attack surface entirely, at the cost of losing all photo/album functionality. Administrators should also review access logs for sequential enumeration patterns against the album routes (rapid successions of incrementing numeric GUIDs), which is the signature of this attack and can be used to identify which files were exposed. A structural hardening measure, if code changes are acceptable, is to migrate file references away from the globally sequential GUID space so identifiers are not guessable.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OSSN is a PHP/MySQL open-source social networking platform whose OssnPhotos component registers page handlers for photo and album routes. The vulnerable handler, ossn_album_page_handler in components/OssnPhotos/ossn_com.php, serves the 'getphoto' and 'getcover' pages by looking up a file GUID and streaming the corresponding image or file to the caller, but it never verifies that the requesting user owns the album, is a friend of the owner, or is otherwise entitled to view it. This is a textbook CWE-862 Missing Authorization defect: authentication and permission checks exist elsewhere in the component but are simply absent on these two routes. OSSN uses a single global auto-increment GUID space (ossn_guid) for objects and files, so identifiers are small, sequential, and trivially enumerable - an attacker needs only to iterate integers and request each one to harvest private content. The vendor's fix (commit cb7c24e70f8c4470ee485caac4889885d2e120b3) adds the missing access validation in the album page handler; the vulnerable code path corresponds to lines 481-521 of the referenced revision. Impact is confined to information disclosure (VC:L in the CVSS v4.0 vector, C:L in the independent CVSS v3.1 assessment), with no integrity or availability component.
