Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated account with subscriber-level privileges or higher (PR:L); the attacker places a script payload in the WordPress user profile Website (user_url) field, which the ctdb_filter_comment_author_name() callback hooked to get_comment_author_link interpolates into a single-quoted href attribute without esc_url() or esc_attr(). The payload fires when any user views a Discussion Board topic that contains a reply authored by the attacker. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated by needing a valid low-privilege account, so sites that allow open/self user registration are materially more exposed than closed sites; the malicious author link must actually be rendered in a topic the victim visits. Affected versions are up to and including 2.6.0.

Impact

This is a stored XSS flaw (CWE-79) carrying a moderate CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.4. The supplied vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N indicates network reach, low complexity, and - via PR:L - an authenticated attacker holding at least subscriber-level access; the S:C (scope change) reflects that the injected script executes in the browsers of other users viewing the topic rather than only in the vulnerable component, which is the normal and correct modeling for stored XSS. No EPSS probability is provided in the input and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation; the Wordfence priority label is 'this_month', consistent with a real-but-not-emergency issue. No SSVC decision fields (automatable, technical impact) were supplied. The practical risk is bounded by the authentication requirement: an attacker must obtain a subscriber account, which is trivial on sites that permit open self-registration but a meaningful barrier on closed sites. Net assessment: a genuine, verifiable stored-XSS requiring remediation on normal patch cadence, not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk false alarm, but also not an emergency - its reach depends heavily on whether the affected site allows user registration.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker registers (or uses) a subscriber-level account on a WordPress site running the Discussion Board plugin and sets their profile Website (user_url) field to a value containing a crafted script payload. When they post a reply in a Discussion Board topic, the unescaped user_url is interpolated into the comment author link, so the script executes in the browser of every user who later views that topic. No public exploit is identified in the supplied data, but the low attack complexity and authenticated-but-low-privilege requirement make exploitation straightforward where registration is open.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 31, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the Discussion Board - WordPress Forum plugin (versions up to and including 2.6.0) lets any authenticated user with subscriber-level access or higher place a script payload in the WordPress profile Website (user_url) field. The plugin's ctdb_filter_comment_author_name() callback, hooked to get_comment_author_link, interpolates that raw URL into a single-quoted href attribute without esc_url() or esc_attr(), so the payload executes in the browser of anyone who opens a forum topic containing the attacker's reply. CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N); no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

An upstream fix has been committed to the plugin trunk in changeset 3761217, which modifies includes/functions/functions-user.php to properly escape the author link (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3761217/wp-discussion-board/trunk/includes/functions/functions-user.php); a tagged released version containing that fix is not independently confirmed, so verify the plugin's current version and changelog before upgrading, and track the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/5dbb177e-3cf8-48fe-9660-999c177cbeb5?source=cve for the fixed release. Because the entry point is the WordPress user profile Website field and only subscriber-level access is required, sites that allow open or self-service user registration are materially more exposed than closed sites; until a patched release is deployed, the practical compensating controls are to disable open registration and to audit existing subscriber accounts for suspicious user_url values, accepting that neither closes the underlying escaping defect for accounts that already hold credentials. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not in CISA KEV.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-79 output-escaping failure inside a WordPress plugin's presentation layer. WordPress stores the profile 'Website' value in the user_url field; the Discussion Board plugin renders reply author names through the get_comment_author_link filter, and its ctdb_filter_comment_author_name() callback rebuilds the anchor markup by concatenating the profile URL directly between single quotes in the href attribute. Because the value is neither passed through esc_url() nor esc_attr() - the escaping primitives WordPress provides for URL and attribute context respectively - an attacker-controlled user_url can break out of the attribute and inject an event handler or new tag. The affected source is visible in the plugin's includes/functions/functions-user.php (around lines 83 and 92) with a related sink in includes/functions/functions-skins.php (line 43). The CVSS vector's Scope:Changed reflects that the injected script executes in the victim's session against the broader WordPress site rather than only within the forum component, and the low PR:L weight reflects that only a subscriber account is needed to seed the payload. Persistence is the key property: the payload lives in the user profile and is re-rendered on every topic view that displays the attacker's reply.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Discussion Board - WordPress Forum Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting in versions up to, and including, 2.6.0 via the user profile Website (user_url) field. This is due to insufficient output escaping in the ctdb_filter_comment_author_name() callback hooked to get_comment_author_link, which interpolates the raw user_url value into a single-quoted href attribute without esc_url() or esc_attr(). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses a Discussion Board topic containing the attacker's reply.
