MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a specific non-default deployment: a site administrator must have published a public-facing ACF Extended form containing an Email action whose attachment row uses a dynamic {field:...} source bound to a submittable field with the Delete option enabled. Only then can an unauthenticated attacker (PR:N) permanently delete an arbitrary attachment by supplying its numeric attachment ID in the form submission, with no ownership or capability verification performed. Limiting factors: the vulnerable form configuration is not present by default, so sites without such a public ACFE Email-action form are not exposed; the attacker must know or enumerate valid numeric attachment IDs; and impact is confined to deletion of media attachments (no read access, no code execution). These conditions are the reason the supplied CVSS vector uses AC:H. |
| Impact | Signals point to a genuine but conditional, mid-tier issue rather than a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 3.1 base is 4.8 (Medium) with AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N: reachable over the network with no authentication (PR:N) and no user interaction, but with high attack complexity (AC:H) that reflects a substantial non-default precondition. Impact is limited to Integrity-Low and Availability-Low (C:N) - the flaw permanently deletes media library attachments, it does not read data or achieve code execution. KEV status is not present, so this is not confirmed actively exploited; no public exploit is identified in the input (references are the Wordfence advisory, source lines, and the patch changeset, not a PoC); and no EPSS score is supplied, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from this data. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), which is consistent with the picture: unauthenticated network reach is offset by the AC:H precondition that a site admin must have deployed a specific public-facing ACFE form configuration. Net: patch on a normal maintenance cadence, prioritizing sites that actually run public ACFE Email-action forms; this is not a high-CVSS-but-trivial issue, but neither does the data show widespread opportunistic exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a WordPress site whose administrator has published a public-facing ACF Extended form with an Email action whose attachment row is bound via a dynamic {field:...} source to a submittable field with the Delete option enabled, an unauthenticated visitor submits the form while supplying a numeric attachment ID they do not own. Because the plugin performs no ownership or capability check, the referenced media library attachment is permanently deleted. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; the attacker only needs to send a crafted form submission. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Unauthenticated attackers can permanently delete arbitrary WordPress media library attachments through the Advanced Custom Fields: Extended plugin (hwk-fr) in all versions up to and including 0.9.2.6, because the Email form action fails to verify that the submitted attachment ID belongs to the submitter or that the user holds any capability. The attack surface is narrow: exploitation only works on sites where an administrator has published a public-facing ACFE form whose Email action attachment row uses a dynamic {field:...} source bound to a submittable field with the Delete option enabled, and the attacker must supply a valid numeric attachment ID. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the assessed impact is limited to integrity and availability of media attachments (no disclosure, no code execution), which is why the assessed vector carries AC:H and the priority signal places remediation within this month rather than immediately.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed. The plugin repository changeset at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3667996/acf-extended is the fix reference to track, and administrators should confirm with the vendor advisory (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/ed7f3f80-4d08-440f-b990-b1099a565ed0?source=cve) which plugin release carries it before upgrading from any version at or below 0.9.2.6. Because the vulnerability is only reachable through a specific form configuration, sites that cannot update immediately can remove exposure by editing any public-facing ACFE form that has an Email action and disabling the Delete option on attachment rows sourced from dynamic {field:...} tokens, or by replacing that dynamic source with a static attachment; the trade-off is that the form will no longer delete submitter-supplied attachments as intended, which may leave uploaded files accumulating. Restricting or unpublishing the affected public form until the plugin is patched also closes the vector, at the cost of losing that form's functionality. Given the this_month priority signal and the limited, destructive-only impact, schedule the update in the current maintenance window rather than treating it as an emergency.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a CWE-862 missing authorization condition inside the form module of ACF Extended, specifically the Email action implementation (module-form-action-email.php in the plugin's includes/modules/form/ directory). When an Email action's attachment row is configured to pull its value from a dynamic {field:...} token, the plugin resolves the submitted form value into an attachment ID and, when the Delete option is enabled on that row, acts on the referenced media item. The code path lacks an ownership check and lacks a current_user_can() style capability check, so any value reaching it is treated as a legitimate attachment reference. The practical consequence is constrained by configuration rather than by complexity: only forms exposing an Email action with a dynamic attachment source plus Delete enabled are reachable, the requester must know or enumerate a numeric attachment ID, and the only observable effect is removal of the attachment post. Unauthenticated access is confirmed by the PR:N metric in the assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L vector, while the AC:H rating reflects the non-default form configuration and ID knowledge required rather than any timing or memory-management property, which the available sources do not describe.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 0.9.2.6. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to permanently delete arbitrary WordPress media library attachments by supplying a numeric attachment ID in the form submission without any ownership or capability verification. Exploitation requires a site administrator to have configured a public-facing ACFE form with an Email action whose attachment row uses a dynamic {field:...} source bound to a submittable field with the Delete option enabled.
