| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a local, already-privileged ImageMagick workflow (prior to 7.1.2-32, or ImageMagick6 prior to 6.9.13-57) that invokes delegate processing and its symlink-based temporary-file shred/cleanup path (the code path gated by the MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES environment variable in AcquireUniqueSymbolicLink). The attacker must be able to create or control a symbolic link at the cleanup target location and the cleanup must follow it (CWE-61). Limiting factors are substantial: no remote vector (AV:L), high attack complexity including timing/race conditions (AC:H), pre-existing high privileges (PR:H), and required user/operator interaction (UI:R); impact is confined to overwriting a target file with random data (integrity), with no confidentiality or availability loss. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite ImageMagick's broad footprint. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, base 4.0/Medium) describes a local-only flaw that stacks multiple hard prerequisites: local access, high attack complexity, already-high privileges, and required user interaction, with impact limited to integrity (file overwrite) and no confidentiality or availability effect. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or POC indicator was supplied in the intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The signals are internally consistent and all point low - the only conflict is the metadata tag 'Information Disclosure', which contradicts the CVSS impact profile (C:N/I:H): this is a destructive symlink-following integrity bug (CWE-61), not a disclosure issue. Even though ImageMagick is deployed extremely widely, the PR:H + AC:H + AV:L gating means real-world risk is minimal and this should not be prioritized above network-reachable or unauthenticated flaws. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local attacker who can influence a privileged ImageMagick workflow pre-places a symbolic link at the path used for delegate temporary-file cleanup. Because the shred/cleanup routine followed the symlink without honoring MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES, the privileged process overwrites the symlink target with random data, corrupting an arbitrary file the attacker could not otherwise write. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires local access, elevated privileges, user interaction, and winning specific timing conditions. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
UNIX symlink-following in ImageMagick's delegate cleanup path allows a local, already-privileged workflow to overwrite a target file with random data. Affected are ImageMagick versions prior to 7.1.2-32 and the ImageMagick6 branch prior to 6.9.13-57; the flaw (CWE-61) causes the shred/cleanup routine to ignore the MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES setting, so it follows attacker-planted symbolic links instead of honoring the configured shred behavior. The attack surface is narrow - CVSS 3.1 scores this 4.0 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R) with integrity-only impact - and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; there is no CISA KEV designation.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade ImageMagick to 7.1.2-32 or later, and upgrade the ImageMagick6 line to 6.9.13-57 or later; the applicable fixes are commit 48e5ce1779fc640a389f0020fd7d965d0c08236e (7.x) and 11d2af00a948e9ca2919d9a8684d335a48484094 (6.x), documented in advisory GHSA-54hm-vrmh-75qj and released at https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/releases/tag/7.1.2-32 and https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick6/releases/tag/6.9.13-57. Because exploitation requires a local, already-privileged workflow plus a controllable symlink at the cleanup target (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H/UI:R), compensating controls are practical where patching is delayed: run ImageMagick delegate processing under a dedicated low-privilege account and restrict write/create permissions on delegate temporary and work directories so untrusted users cannot plant symlinks, at the cost of added privilege-separation configuration; or execute conversions inside a confined container or tmpfs-backed scratch directory where symlink targets resolve only to disposable paths, accepting slightly higher operational overhead. Validating that MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES is correctly applied post-upgrade, and avoiding shared, world-writable delegate temp locations, further reduces exposure. No vendor-released patch is claimed beyond the versions noted above.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-61 (UNIX Symbolic Link Following) in ImageMagick's utility layer. The affected function, AcquireUniqueSymbolicLink, manages temporary-file creation and the associated shred/cleanup logic in MagickCore/utility.c (ImageMagick 7.x) and magick/utility.c (ImageMagick6). The security fix (commit 48e5ce1779fc640a389f0020fd7d965d0c08236e on the 7.x branch and 11d2af00a948e9ca2919d9a8684d335a48484094 on the 6.x branch) adds a fallback so that when the shred-passes parameter is NULL, the code reads the MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES environment value via GetEnvironmentValue. Prior to this change, the delegate symlink cleanup path failed to consult MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES, meaning operators who disabled or tuned shredding through that environment variable were not actually honored, and the cleanup could follow a symbolic link at the cleanup target and overwrite the linked file with random data - an integrity-only effect with no confidentiality or availability loss. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects the broad range of ImageMagick releases covered prior to the fixed tags.

2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-32, delegate symlink cleanup does not check the MAGICK_SHRED_PASSES environment variable, allowing a local privileged workflow to overwrite a file with random data. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2-32.
