1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Hard prerequisite: the attacker must have ALREADY compromised a Chrome renderer process (e.g., via a prior renderer RCE), because the flaw lets that already-controlled renderer bypass Site Isolation boundaries using a crafted HTML page. Site Isolation is enabled by default, so no special configuration is needed - but exploitation is strictly limited to Chrome versions before 155.0.8059.39 and cannot occur without the preceding renderer compromise, making this a chained, second-stage vulnerability rather than a standalone remote attack. The vendor vector also marks UI:R (user must load a page), though a compromised renderer typically already controls page content.

Impact

This is a genuine-but-moderate priority, not a drop-everything issue. The signals are consistent and point the same direction: Chromium rated it Medium severity, the CVSS base score is 6.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N), EPSS is very low at 0.19% (8th percentile), it is NOT listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit has been identified. The single most important mitigating factor is baked into the description but UNDER-REPRESENTED in the vendor CVSS vector: exploitation requires an attacker to have ALREADY compromised the renderer process. That makes this a second-stage/sandbox-escape-adjacent bug, not an independently exploitable network flaw. CONFLICT TO FLAG: the vendor vector encodes PR:N (no privileges), yet the description explicitly requires a compromised renderer - a substantial prerequisite that in my independent assessment maps to PR:H. Also note the impact labeling: Google scored this I:H/C:N, but a Site Isolation bypass conceptually enables cross-site data access, which reads more like a confidentiality impact - verify intended impact with the vendor. Net: real defect worth patching on normal Chrome update cadence, but the compromised-renderer precondition and low EPSS argue strongly against treating it as an urgent, widely-exploitable threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker first gains code execution inside a Chrome renderer process through a separate vulnerability, then serves a crafted HTML page that abuses the Site Isolation weakness to reach content or data belonging to a different site that should have been isolated. No public exploit code has been identified, and the attack is only meaningful as the second stage of a chain that already requires renderer compromise.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026

Bypassing Site Isolation in Google Chrome versions prior to 155.0.8059.39 allows an attacker who has already compromised a renderer process to cross site boundaries and access data or resources that should be isolated, using a crafted HTML page. The flaw is a missing authorization check (CWE-862) in the SiteIsolation component and was rated Medium by Chromium; its CVSS is 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/C:N/I:H/A:N) per the vendor, while independent assessment treats it as a second-stage, chained issue that requires a prior renderer compromise and therefore a hard AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/C:H/I:N/A:N posture. EPSS is low at 0.19% (8th percentile), no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, there is no CISA KEV listing, and Google has released a patched build.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Google Chrome 155.0.8059.39 or later, distributed through the Stable Channel Update for Desktop (https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2026/10/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_086471744.html) and available via chrome://settings/help, enterprise MSI/PKG packages, or the platform package managers (Windows, macOS, Linux); downstream Chromium rebuilds should track the corresponding upstream revision. There is no configuration workaround that fully closes this hole, and disabling Site Isolation features or launching Chrome with --disable-site-isolation-trials or --no-sandbox makes the underlying exposure strictly worse, so those should not be used as mitigations. Because exploitation is a hard-prerequisite chain that begins with a compromised renderer, the most effective compensating controls are those that lower the chance of renderer compromise in the first place: keep the Chrome sandbox enabled, apply Chrome updates for renderer-memory-safety bugs promptly rather than deferring them, avoid browsing untrusted content in profiles that hold sensitive authenticated sessions, and use containerization or separate OS user profiles for high-risk browsing; the trade-off is reduced convenience and, in managed fleets, additional update/test overhead. If patching must be staged, prioritize internet-facing, high-value-session users first, and monitor for Chromium issue 554348119 updates for any revised guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Chrome's Site Isolation architecture assigns content from different origins to separate renderer processes so that a compromised or malicious renderer cannot arbitrarily read cross-origin data; each renderer is additionally contained by the OS-level sandbox. This CVE is an authorization failure (CWE-862, Missing Authorization) within the SiteIsolation logic: the broker/browser-side checks that are supposed to prevent a renderer from extending its reach past its own site boundary are missing or insufficient, so a renderer that is already compromised can escalate across the isolation boundary. The generic CPE cpe:2.3:a:google:chrome:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies Chrome across all platforms as affected; Chrome 155.0.8059.39 is the first fixed build. Note the divergence between the vendor vector (PR:N/UI:R, implying a page-load path) and the independent assessment (PR:H, C:H/I:N), which reflects the reality that the attacker must first control a renderer and that the primary consequence after escape is unauthorized read of cross-origin data rather than integrity modification. This is a classic chained vulnerability: it is not remotely triggerable on its own, but it materially raises the value of any separate renderer-code-execution bug because it converts renderer compromise into cross-site data exposure.
