Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated MISP account that already holds at least read visibility of an event owned by a different organization, and the attacker must query via the deleted-attributes search or the paginated attribute listing using the deleted filter - the normal event detail view is NOT affected because it correctly restricts soft-deleted attributes to the owning org and sync-permission users. Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible for unauthenticated actors (PR:L), is only meaningful on multi-organization or federated/community instances where cross-org event visibility exists, and only soft-deleted (retracted) attributes are exposed - live/active attributes and non-visible events are not disclosed. Only confidentiality is affected; no data can be modified.

Impact

This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority information-disclosure issue, not a critical emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) yields a 5.3 Medium score, and the impact is confined to confidentiality only (VC:L, with VI:N/VA:N) - no integrity or availability effect and no scope/subsequent-system change. The PR:L metric confirms exploitation requires an authenticated account, which substantially narrows the attacker population to existing MISP users (or federated/community partners) who already have read visibility of the target event. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or weaponization - signals are consistent rather than conflicting. The realistic concern is an insider or a semi-trusted community/partner member on a shared MISP instance pulling soft-deleted intelligence from other organizations, rather than mass internet-wide exploitation. Net: schedule patching as routine hardening (especially for multi-org/community-federated deployments), but it does not warrant emergency out-of-band response.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated MISP user who belongs to Organization B but has read visibility of an event owned by Organization A issues a deleted-attributes search (or loads the paginated attribute view with the deleted filter). The vulnerable fetchAttributes/fetchPaginatedAttributes code paths return Organization A's soft-deleted attributes - IOCs and context the owner intended to retract - to the unauthorized user. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the flaw is trivially triggered through the normal search/API interface.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Improper access control in MISP's attribute search and paginated attribute listing endpoints discloses soft-deleted (retracted) threat intelligence attributes belonging to other organizations to any authenticated user who already holds read visibility of the event, yielding a confidentiality-only impact rated CVSS 5.3 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N). Exploitation requires an authenticated MISP account (PR:L) and an explicit query for deleted attributes via the deleted-attributes search or the paginated attribute view with the deleted filter; the normal event detail view is not affected because it already restricts soft-deleted attributes to the owning organization and sync-permission users. All MISP versions prior to v2.5.48 are affected, the issue is rated a genuine but low-to-moderate priority information-disclosure problem rather than a critical emergency, no public exploit code identified at time of analysis and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) exists, and practical relevance is highest on multi-organization, federated, or community instances where cross-organization event visibility exists.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor patch by upgrading to MISP v2.5.48 or later, which incorporates upstream commit https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/bd81c23cf and closes both the paginated attribute listing (app/Model/Event.php) and attribute search (app/Model/MispAttribute.php) code paths; this is the only complete remediation because the fix changes query-layer authorization logic rather than exposing a configurable switch in the provided data. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls that reduce the population able to reach the broken code path: tighten cross-organization event distribution using sharing groups and stricter distribution levels so fewer accounts hold read visibility of other organizations' events, accepting the trade-off that this reduces federation and intelligence-sharing utility; audit and minimize role assignments so that perm_sync, which by design continues to expose soft-deleted attributes, is granted only to genuinely trusted synchronization accounts (side effect: reduced sync capability for federated peers if roles are trimmed too aggressively); and flag or rate-limit the deleted-attributes search and paginated deleted filter for unusual cross-organization query patterns, recognizing that this is detection and monitoring rather than prevention. No vendor-released patch alternative or hotfix independent of the v2.5.48 code line is identified in the available data, so scheduling the upgrade should be prioritized according to the low-to-moderate risk and the confidentiality-only, retracted-data scope of the exposure.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is an open-source threat intelligence platform whose core data objects are attributes - IOCs, indicators, and contextual metadata attached to events owned by a specific organization. Attributes use soft-delete semantics: a 'deleted' flag retracts an attribute from normal visibility without physically removing the row, and the platform deliberately restricts who can still see those retracted rows. The defect is categorized as CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the event detail code path (fetchEvent) correctly gated soft-deleted attribute visibility using an event-owner subquery plus the user's perm_sync role flag, but the attribute-centric code paths - fetchPaginatedAttributes in app/Model/Event.php and fetchAttributes in app/Model/MispAttribute.php - omitted that same ownership check, so filtering on the deleted flag returned retracted rows from other organizations' events to any user with event visibility. The upstream fix (commit bd81c23cf) adds a guard that, when deleted != 0 and the user lacks perm_sync, unsets the caller-supplied Attribute.deleted condition and constrains results to deleted rows whose event owner subquery org matches the user's org_id, or (for a deleted === 1 request) to live rows plus the user's own deleted rows; the MispAttribute::fetchAttributes path similarly appends an Event.org_id = user org_id restriction. The root cause is therefore a query-layer authorization gap created by divergent code paths rather than a flaw in the event-level ACL model itself, and only read access to already-retracted attributes is affected - nothing is modified and live attributes are not exposed.

DescriptionCVE.org

MISP contains an improper access control vulnerability in its attribute search and paginated attribute view endpoints.

When a user queries for soft-deleted attributes (e.g., via the deleted-attributes search or the paginated attribute listing), the application returned soft-deleted attributes belonging to events owned by other organizations to any authenticated user who had visibility of the event. The event detail view correctly restricted soft-deleted attribute visibility to the owning organization and sync-permission users, but the attribute search and paginated view code paths lacked this restriction.

Preconditions:

  • An authenticated MISP user with at least read access to an event owned by another organization.
  • The user issues a query for deleted attributes (search or paginated view with the deleted filter).

Impact:

  • Confidentiality: Soft-deleted threat intelligence attributes (e.g., IOCs, indicators, context) from other organizations are disclosed to unauthorized users. This may expose sensitive intelligence that the owning organization intended to remove from general visibility.

Affected versions: MISP versions prior to v2.5.48.
