| Exploitation Conditions | Three concrete conditions must all hold: (1) the host MISP instance must have at least one linked (remote) server configured - not a default state; (2) that linked server must be attacker-controlled or compromised so it can return a malicious event ID; and (3) the victim must be an authenticated user of the host instance who navigates to the ID Translator page for the relevant event (UI:A). Exploitation is therefore limited to federated deployments and gated by the trust placed in linked servers and by required victim interaction, substantially narrowing real-world exposure despite the network vector. |
| Impact | This is a stored/reflected cross-site scripting flaw (CWE-79) rated as medium severity (vendor CVSS 4.0 base 5.1). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided; the only exploitation signal is the vendor patch commit (bd5e80c84), so the status is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - do not treat it as actively exploited. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) marks it network-reachable with required victim interaction and subsequent-system (browser) confidentiality/integrity impact only, which aligns with XSS. However, the PR:N and AT:N choices understate real preconditions: exploitation depends on the host having a linked remote MISP server configured AND that server being malicious or compromised, which is a non-default, attacker-controlled-infrastructure requirement - a meaningful limiting factor the raw score does not reflect. Net assessment: a legitimate but not urgent issue - contained client-side impact, meaningful attack prerequisites, no evidence of exploitation - patch on a normal cycle, prioritizing instances federated with less-trusted partners. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls or has compromised a MISP server that the victim organization has configured as a linked (remote) server returns a crafted event ID containing HTML/JavaScript. When an authenticated analyst in the host organization opens the ID Translator page for the corresponding event, the unencoded event ID is rendered in their browser, executing attacker script for session hijacking or credential theft. No public exploit code was provided, but the patch diff clearly shows the missing output encoding. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Cross-site scripting in MISP’s ID Translator feature (before version 2.5.48) lets a malicious linked MISP server return a crafted event ID that executes arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of any authenticated user who views the ID Translator page, leading to session hijacking or credential theft. Exploitation requires a configured linked server, a compromised remote instance, and victim interaction (UI:R); it is unauthenticated from the attacker’s perspective (PR:N) but does not affect availability. No public exploit or active exploitation is identified, and the vendor has released a patch (commit bd5e80c84) that casts remote event IDs to integers and applies output encoding.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to MISP 2.5.48 or later to apply the vendor patch (commit bd5e80c84). This patch casts remote event IDs to integers and applies output encoding in the ID Translator views, preventing XSS. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, as a temporary compensating control, consider disabling or restricting access to the ID Translator feature for non-administrative users, and audit the list of linked MISP servers to ensure only trusted instances are configured; however, these measures may impact federation workflows. Patching is the only complete fix; no other workarounds are provided by the vendor.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw (CWE-79) in the ID Translator feature of MISP, an open-source threat intelligence platform written in PHP using the CakePHP framework. When a user views the ID Translator page, the application queries linked (remote) MISP servers for corresponding event identifiers. The remote event ID returned by the linked server was directly rendered in the HTML output without proper encoding, allowing a malicious or compromised remote server to inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript. The vendor patch (commit bd5e80c84) addresses the issue by casting the remote event ID to an integer before use and by applying the h() output-encoding function in the relevant view templates (id_translator.ctp and Overmind theme). The vulnerability is network-exploitable but requires victim interaction (UI:R) and a configured linked server; the independent CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, while the vendor CVSS 4.0 vector is 5.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N).

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the ID Translator feature. When a user views the ID Translator page, the application queries linked (remote) MISP servers for corresponding event identifiers. The event ID returned by the remote server was rendered in the HTML output without proper output encoding.
A malicious or compromised linked server could return a crafted event ID containing arbitrary HTML or JavaScript markup. This markup would be rendered in the browser of any user in the host organization who views the ID Translator page, enabling session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.
Preconditions:
- The victim must be an authenticated user of the host MISP instance.
- A linked server must be configured on the host instance.
- The victim must navigate to the ID Translator page for a given event.
Affected versions: <2.5.48.
