Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires a pre-existing published Noptin campaign post whose body contains a [[subscriber.*]] merge tag (e.g. first_name) - without such a campaign there is no sink to store the payload. The unauthenticated attacker must first POST an entity-encoded payload to the public manage_preferences form (which issues its own nonce on the same page, so the nonce is not a barrier), then obtain/embed their own confirm_key into a campaign preview URL. Execution only occurs when a privileged user is socially engineered into opening that preview URL, so the script runs in the victim's authenticated browser context. Limiting factors: dependence on a non-default vulnerable campaign configuration, required interaction by a privileged victim, and high attack complexity (AC:H) materially constrain realistic exploitation despite the unauthenticated entry point.

Impact

This is a medium-severity (CVSS 5.4) stored XSS in the Noptin WordPress newsletter plugin, and the real-world signals point to a low-to-moderate priority rather than an urgent threat. Positive risk signals are limited: AV:N makes it network-reachable and PR:N means the initial injection needs no authentication. However, every other signal dampens the risk - AC:H reflects the multi-stage precondition chain, impacts are only C:L/I:L with A:N, there is no CISA KEV listing, no public exploit code was identified, and no EPSS score was supplied to gauge exploitation probability. CONFLICT TO FLAG: the provided CVSS vector sets UI:N (no user interaction), yet the description's own attack chain explicitly requires socially engineering a privileged user into opening a crafted campaign preview URL - that is user interaction, so the authoritative vector appears to understate the interaction requirement and overstate ease of exploitation; verify UI with Wordfence. Because the payload only fires after a human victim clicks an attacker-supplied link and only when a vulnerable campaign already exists, this behaves as a targeted social-engineering vector, not a wormable or mass-exploitable flaw. A fix (4.4.0) exists, so remediation is straightforward.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker finds a Noptin site that has a published email campaign whose body uses a [[subscriber.*]] merge tag, then submits an entity-encoded script payload through the public manage_preferences form (which supplies its own nonce). The attacker then crafts a campaign preview URL embedding their confirm_key and, through social engineering, convinces a logged-in administrator to open it, at which point the stored script executes in the privileged user's browser session. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the high attack complexity plus required victim interaction make this an opportunistic, targeted scenario rather than a reliable mass attack.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 10, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in the Noptin Newsletter WordPress plugin up to version 4.3.10 allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute in the browser of a privileged user. Exploitation requires a published campaign post containing a [[subscriber.*]] merge tag and social engineering of an admin to visit a crafted preview URL; the independent assessment rates this as medium severity (CVSS 5.4) with high attack complexity and required user interaction. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Noptin Newsletter version 4.4.0 or later. The vendor's GitHub repository shows commits between 4.3.10 and 4.4.0 that address the issue (https://github.com/hizzle-co/noptin/compare/4.3.10...4.4.0). For users unable to immediately upgrade, consider disabling the plugin until patched, as no other workaround is documented. Ensure that campaign posts do not contain [[subscriber.*]] merge tags if preview functionality remains in use, and limit preview access to trusted administrators.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is a stored cross-site scripting (CWE-79) in the Noptin Newsletter plugin's handling of custom field merge tags within subscriber data. Insufficient input sanitization and output escaping allow an attacker to submit a payload via the public manage_preferences form, which is then stored in the subscriber's custom field (e.g., first_name). The payload is later rendered unsanitized when a campaign preview is generated, specifically when the campaign body contains a [[subscriber.*]] merge tag. The attacker must first obtain a confirm_key from the form submission and then embed it in a preview URL sent to a privileged user. Affected code paths include the email preview, generator, and dynamic content tag classes (referenced in the advisory). The fix appears to be in version 4.4.0, as indicated by the GitHub compare link between 4.3.10 and 4.4.0.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Simple Newsletter Plugin - Noptin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'noptin_fields[<custom_field_merge_tag>] (e.g. first_name)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.3.10 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The attack chain requires a published campaign post whose body contains a [[subscriber.*]] merge tag; the unauthenticated attacker first POSTs the entity-encoded payload to the public manage_preferences form (which issues its own nonce on the same page), then pivots execution by embedding their confirm_key in a campaign preview URL sent to a privileged user via social engineering.
