| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the plugin's 'server-side translations' feature to be enabled - this is the explicit precondition named in the description and is not necessarily the default, so sites using client-side translation are not affected. The attacker needs no authentication (PR:N) and can submit the malicious translation remotely because the plugin fails to restrict who may store translations. Key limiting factors: a victim must subsequently load the poisoned translated page (UI:R), the vulnerable version must be below 2.34.14, and the attack complexity is High (AC:H), indicating conditions outside the attacker's direct control (e.g., reliance on the translation-storage path and specific configuration). |
| Impact | This is a stored XSS flaw (CWE-79) in the GPTranslate WordPress plugin. The provided CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.5) signals an unauthenticated, network-reachable issue (PR:N) that nonetheless requires high attack complexity (AC:H) and victim interaction (UI:R). The CIA impacts are rated High across the board with scope Unchanged, which appears inflated for a reflected-in-page stored XSS - typical client-side XSS yields Low impacts with a scope change (code runs in the victim's browser, a different security authority), so the real severity is likely moderate rather than the 7.5 shown. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis; combined with AC:H and the non-default 'server-side translations' requirement, this reads as a genuine but conditional, lower-urgency issue rather than a mass-exploited priority. The headline limiting factor is the AC:H / non-default-configuration dependency, which materially lowers real-world risk despite the unauthenticated vector. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a site running GPTranslate before 2.34.14 with server-side translations enabled, an unauthenticated attacker submits a translation containing a malicious script payload, which the plugin stores without sanitization. When a visitor or administrator later loads the affected translated page, the unescaped payload executes in their browser, enabling session/cookie theft or actions in their authenticated context. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the GPTranslate WordPress plugin (versions below 2.34.14) lets unauthenticated attackers submit translation strings that the plugin stores without proper authorization checks and later renders without output escaping, so malicious JavaScript executes in the browser of any user who views a poisoned translated page. The flaw is only reachable when the plugin's server-side translations feature is enabled, meaning sites relying on client-side translation are not exposed, and successful abuse still depends on a victim subsequently loading the affected page (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no confirmed active exploitation; a vendor patch is available in version 2.34.14.
RemediationAI
Upgrade GPTranslate to version 2.34.14 or later; the vendor has released a patch and 2.34.14 is the first fixed release, so this is the primary and preferred remediation. Verify the update actually applied by checking the plugin version in the WordPress admin Plugins list or via WP-CLI (wp plugin list --name=gptranslate), since WordPress plugins with version-check quirks can silently fail to update. If immediate patching is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable the plugin's server-side translations feature and rely on client-side translation instead, which removes the vulnerable store-and-render path entirely; the trade-off is changed translation behavior and possibly degraded translation coverage or performance for visitors, and administrators should confirm that no other configuration still writes translation strings server-side. Additional interim measures include restricting access to the plugin's translation submission endpoint via web-server or WAF rules that block unauthenticated POSTs carrying script markup (these can be evaded with encoding tricks and require tuning to avoid blocking legitimate translations), and deploying a Content Security Policy that discourages inline script execution - which may break legitimate site functionality. Site owners should also treat any period of exposure as a potential session-compromise event and rotate credentials or invalidate sessions for users who visited affected translated pages. Technical ContextAI · show details
GPTranslate is a WordPress translation plugin that accepts and persists translation strings and then renders them into translated page output. The vulnerability is a classic CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) with a stored/persistent flavor, arising from two compounding defects: the plugin does not apply WordPress capability checks (such as current_user_can) to the endpoint that writes translations, permitting unauthenticated users to persist arbitrary content, and it does not escape those stored values with functions like esc_html()/esc_attr() or wp_kses() when emitting them into HTML pages. The stored payload therefore breaks out of its HTML context and executes as script in the origin of the WordPress site. The critical technical precondition is that server-side translation must be enabled; in that mode translations are persisted server-side and injected into page output, whereas client-side translation does not route through the vulnerable storage-and-render path. Because the injected script runs in the site's origin, the assessed impact is limited scope-changed confidentiality and integrity effects (session/cookie exposure, content tampering, redirection, or actions performed as the victim), which is consistent with the independent assessment (S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N).

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
The GPTranslate WordPress plugin before 2.34.14 does not properly restrict who can store translations, and does not escape them when outputting them in translated pages, allowing unauthenticated users to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks when server-side translations are enabled.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity stored cross-site scripting flaw in the GPTranslate WordPress plugin (versions below 2.34.14) allows unauthenticated outsiders to plant malicious JavaScript in translation content that then runs in the browsers of staff and visitors viewing the affected page. Any organization running the plugin with server-side translations enabled is exposed, though exploitation requires a victim to load the poisoned page and no public exploit or active attack has been observed to date. Because the same stored script can reach privileged administrators, the realistic worst case is session theft and full site takeover, making this a priority remediation despite the absence of confirmed exploitation.
