| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated MISP account holding basic write permission (perm_add) on the target instance; the attacker then embeds a nested record under the model-alias key (e.g. 'Attribute', 'Object', 'EventReport', 'ShadowAttribute') inside a submission to any affected endpoint (attribute add/edit, event edit, free-text import, sighting capture, shadow-attribute proposal, event-report creation, object-reference add, or user admin edit). Exploitation is limited to instances running MISP <2.5.48 and to attackers who already possess a write-capable account - a meaningful constraint on public/community instances but weak protection where many semi-trusted members share one server. No special non-default configuration or user interaction is needed beyond having the perm_add privilege. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:H/SA:N, base 8.3) is credible and internally consistent: exploitation is fully remote, low-complexity, needs only a low-privilege authenticated account (PR:L, the perm_add write role), no user interaction, and the impact is purely integrity - both to the vulnerable system (VI:H) and, notably, to other tenants/orgs (SI:H) with no confidentiality or availability effect. This is a genuine authorization-bypass (IDOR, CWE-639) rather than a raw memory/RCE class bug, so the danger is silent cross-tenant data tampering, not takeover. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC are provided, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the score is driven by impact and ease, not by observed exploitation. The one caveat: PR:L means the attacker must already hold a valid write-capable account on the MISP instance, which for a threat-intelligence sharing platform often means a semi-trusted member of a sharing community rather than an anonymous internet attacker; that materially lowers real-world exposure versus an unauthenticated flaw. A vendor patch (MISP commit 9485ae40d, fixed in 2.5.48) is confirmed and the root cause is clearly documented in the diff, so this is a real, patch-now integrity issue for multi-tenant/community MISP deployments, but not an unauthenticated-RCE-grade emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privilege user holding perm_add on a shared MISP instance submits an attribute-add (or event-edit, sighting, shadow-attribute, object-reference, etc.) request in which they embed a nested block keyed by the model alias (e.g. 'Attribute') carrying an attacker-chosen id and event_id. MISP sanitizes the flat outer record (stripping id, pinning event_id) but the CakePHP ORM's set() binds to the inner nested record instead, so the write lands on a row belonging to another organization or event the attacker cannot read - letting them overwrite, re-parent, or soft-delete it. No public POC is identified, but the mechanism is fully described in the patch commit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Cross-tenant record tampering in MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) versions before 2.5.48 lets any authenticated user holding the basic write role (perm_add) overwrite attribute values, re-parent objects into their own events, or soft-delete rows owned by other organizations and events they have no read access to. The root cause is that the CakePHP ORM's set() gives precedence to an attacker-supplied nested key matching the model alias, so MISP's sanitization (primary-key stripping, event_id/object_id pinning) is applied to the outer flat record while the ORM actually persists the inner attacker-controlled one; the independent assessment confirms this is a fully remote, low-complexity exploit (PR:L, no UI) with integrity-only impact that extends across tenants (SI:H), and no public exploit code or in-the-wild activity has been identified at time of analysis. A vendor fix is available via upstream commit 9485ae40d, with the affected range ending at MISP 2.5.48.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to MISP 2.5.48 or later, since the published affected range is everything below 2.5.48; the fix is carried in upstream commit https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/9485ae40d (note this is a GitHub commit reference, so confirm the corresponding tagged release on the vendor advisory before treating the version as independently verified). Until the upgrade is deployed, the practical compensating controls are: (1) restrict the perm_add write role to genuinely trusted organizations and users, which removes the attacker prerequisite but reduces collaboration on shared/community instances that rely on broad contributor access; (2) if you cannot upgrade, backport the AppModel::save() guard manually - it rejects any save where a flat record also carries a nested key matching the model alias, which is exactly the exploit shape, at the cost of also refusing legitimate clients that mix flat fields with a nested alias block in one request; (3) place a reverse-proxy/WAF rule in front of the instance that rejects request bodies where top-level scalar fields coexist with a nested object keyed to the model alias (Attribute, Object, EventReport, Sighting, AttributeTag, ShadowAttribute, Event, User), accepting the trade-off that some legitimate import or API clients may be blocked; and (4) monitor for anomalous cross-organization record edits, object re-parenting and soft-deletes and maintain recent backups, because although the flaw grants no confidentiality or availability impact in the assessed vector, the destructive soft-delete capability means data can be lost and must be restored rather than merely corrected.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP is an open-source threat-intelligence sharing platform built on CakePHP, and the flaw lives in how its controller layer hands user-submitted data to the CakePHP ORM. CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key) describes the class precisely: the application builds a sanitized flat record and pins ownership fields (event_id, object_id) plus strips the primary key, but CakePHP's Model::set() treats a non-empty nested key whose name equals the model alias as the authoritative record and discards the sibling scalar fields. An attacker therefore submits a payload containing both the flat scalar fields and a nested block under the alias key (e.g. 'Attribute', 'Object', 'EventReport', 'Sighting', 'AttributeTag', 'ShadowAttribute'); the sanitizer operates on the outer array while the ORM binds the inner one, which carries a chosen id and event_id and defeats the ownership checks entirely. The upstream patch has two halves: controllers across AttributesController, EventsController, EventReportsController, ObjectReferencesController, ShadowAttributesController and UsersController are corrected from writing $this->request->data['Alias'] = $this->request->data to wrapping with $this->request->data = array('Alias' => $this->request->data), and a new AppModel::save() override refuses any save where the record is flat but also carries a nested alias key, logging a warning and returning false. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all unfixed MISP builds in the 2.x line are in scope, and a regression test (tests/testregressions.py) was added to the CI workflow.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains an improper input validation vulnerability in its ORM save path. When a user submits data through various endpoints (attribute add/edit, event edit, free-text import, sighting capture, shadow attribute proposal, event report creation, object reference add, user admin edit), the application sanitizes the flat record by stripping the primary key and pinning the event_id or object_id to the caller's context. However, the underlying ORM's set() method gives priority to a nested key whose name matches the model alias and discards the outer scalar fields.
An authenticated user with basic write permissions can exploit this by embedding a nested block under the model alias key inside their request. The sanitization logic (id removal, event_id pinning) is applied to the outer record, but the ORM binds to the inner record instead, which carries an attacker-chosen id and event_id. This allows the attacker to overwrite, re-parent, or soft-delete rows belonging to other organizations or events they have no read access to.
Impact:
- Cross-tenant data integrity compromise (attribute values rewritten, objects re-parented to attacker events, rows soft-deleted)
- Affects multiple entity types: Attribute, Object, EventReport, Sighting, AttributeTag, ShadowAttribute
- Requires only a low-privilege authenticated account with perm_add
Affected versions: <2.5.48
Executive ViewAI
Organizations using MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) versions before 2.5.48 face a cross-tenant record tampering vulnerability that can undermine the integrity of shared threat intelligence. An authenticated user with basic write permissions (perm_add) can overwrite attribute values, re-parent objects, or soft-delete records belonging to other organizations, eroding trust in collaborative defense. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the integrity-only impact across tenants warrants immediate patching and access review.
