MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated account on the same Kaneo instance (PR:L) plus knowledge of valid project, task, label, or workspace identifiers belonging to a different workspace; per the description these identifiers can be harvested out-of-band, for example from shared project links. Affected deployments are Kaneo before 2.1.6, where API routes in the task, label, activity, and search modules lacked the workspaceAccess membership middhorization check. No user interaction is needed. Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible for a fully unauthenticated external attacker, and the attacker must obtain target identifiers - so instances hosting only a single trusted workspace/tenant face substantially lower realistic risk than multi-tenant deployments. |
| Impact | The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 score of 7.7 (High) reflects a network-reachable flaw (AV:N) with low complexity (AC:L), no user interaction (UI:N), and full High impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of workspace data (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H). Two metrics materially temper the raw score: PR:L means the attacker must already hold a valid authenticated Kaneo account, and AT:P reflects that exploitation requires obtaining valid object identifiers (project/task/label/workspace IDs) belonging to a victim workspace. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public exploit code is present in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation - the finding rests on a VulnCheck advisory and a confirmed vendor patch. The signals are internally consistent (the CVSS 4.0 vector, CWE-862 missing authorization, and the source diff adding workspaceAccess membership checks all agree). Realistic priority is moderate: this is a genuine cross-tenant broken-access-control bug that matters most for Kaneo instances hosting multiple untrusted workspaces/tenants, but it is NOT an unauthenticated internet-wide issue and requires both an account and knowledge of target identifiers. Note the input Tag 'Authentication Bypass' is imprecise - the attacker is authenticated and the defect is missing authorization (IDOR-style), not an authentication bypass. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated low-privileged Kaneo user obtains a project or task identifier belonging to another workspace - for example from a shared project link - and calls API routes (in the task, label, activity, or search modules) that lack membership checks in versions before 2.1.6. With that identifier they can read projects and tasks, modify or delete tasks, labels and comments, and search another workspace's contents. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though the root cause is confirmed by the vendor patch diff. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Kaneo project-management installations before 2.1.6 fail to enforce workspace membership on API routes in the task, label, activity, and search modules, so an authenticated user with a valid account on the instance can read, modify, or delete projects, tasks, labels, and comments belonging to other workspaces by simply supplying a foreign project, task, label, or workspace identifier. Exploitation requires both a legitimate authenticated account (CVSS PR:L) and knowledge of valid identifiers from another tenant, which per the source advisory can be harvested out-of-band from shared project links; no user interaction is needed and the flaw is network reachable. Impact is bounded to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of workspace data within the affected instance, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. Multi-tenant or multi-workspace deployments face materially higher exposure than single-workspace instances, and the vendor-released patch is version 2.1.6.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Kaneo 2.1.6, the vendor-released fixed version (release tag https://github.com/usekaneo/kaneo/releases/tag/v2.1.6), which applies the workspace-membership middleware via commit https://github.com/usekaneo/kaneo/commit/6d3555e9c07ec7ce7f68477d669eec67fce33cc3; no configuration change is needed beyond deploying the patched build. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict the exposure rather than relying on generic hardening: disable open or self-service account registration and provision accounts only for vetted users, since the attack requires a valid authenticated account and this removes the low-privilege foothold (side effect: onboarding becomes manual). Treat the instance as single-tenant by segregating distinct teams onto separate instances or network segments, because deployments hosting only one trusted workspace cannot be cross-read (side effect: added operational overhead and duplicated state). Audit and revoke externally shared project links that leak project, task, or label identifiers, and rotate any identifiers, API tokens, or invitation links already distributed outside the intended workspace (side effect: existing user bookmarks and integrations break). Finally, place the Kaneo API behind a reverse proxy restricted to trusted networks or a VPN with per-user access logging, so identifier-guessing attempts from untrusted sources are blocked and auditable (side effect: reduced remote usability). Technical ContextAI · show details
Kaneo (usekaneo/kaneo) is an open-source project and task management platform whose backend API is written in TypeScript on the Hono framework. The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization): the route handlers in apps/api/src/task, apps/api/src/label, apps/api/src/activity, and apps/api/src/search resolved resources directly from client-supplied identifiers (projectId, taskId, labelId, activityId, and query parameters) without verifying that the calling user was a member of the workspace that owns the resource, producing a classic broken-object-level-authorization condition. The upstream fix commit 6d3555e9c07ec7ce7f68477d669eec67fce33cc3 introduces a workspace-access-middleware module exposing a workspaceAccess helper with contextual guards (fromProject, fromTask, fromLabel, fromActivity, fromParam, fromBody, fromQuery) and inserts the appropriate middleware into each affected route, so that ownership is resolved from the identifier before the handler executes. Public source evidence is anchored on the pre-fix task route at apps/api/src/task/index.ts lines 252-275. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:usekaneo:kaneo:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* matches all Kaneo releases prior to 2.1.6. Because the missing check sits in the API layer rather than in authentication, every endpoint listed remains reachable by any user who can successfully log in, including low-privilege accounts.

DescriptionCVE.org
Kaneo before 2.1.6 contains a missing authorization vulnerability that allows authenticated users to access other workspaces by supplying project, task, label or workspace identifiers to API routes lacking membership checks. Attackers who obtain identifiers, for example from shared project links, can read projects and tasks, modify or delete tasks, labels and comments, and search workspace contents.
Executive ViewAI
Kaneo project-management installations before 2.1.6 contain an authorization flaw that allows any authenticated user to read, modify, or delete data in other workspaces. This creates cross-team and cross-tenant data exposure risk for multi-workspace deployments, affecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of projects, tasks, labels, and comments. Leadership should prioritize remediation because the impact is bounded to the affected instance but can undermine customer trust and operational integrity; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
