| Exploitation Conditions | No special conditions - remote unauthenticated modification is possible against default configurations of Wekan at or below version 18.15, because the server-side Boards.allow authorization rule granted any update containing the 'sort' field without checking userId or board membership. The only prerequisite is network reachability to the Wekan server's data endpoint. The limiting factor is the narrow scope of what can be changed: an attacker can only alter the board 'sort' ordering value, not board contents, membership, or other fields; there is no authentication, user interaction, or non-default setting required to trigger it. |
| Impact | The input CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N) is internally consistent with the description - the flaw is remotely reachable over the network, requires no authentication (PR:N, corroborated by the description's 'unauthenticated attackers' and the commit, where Boards.allow returned true without verifying userId), needs no user interaction, and affects only integrity. However, the I:H (High integrity) rating is almost certainly inflated: the actual tampering capability is limited to changing a board's 'sort' value, i.e. the display ordering of boards. This is a cosmetic/organizational data modification with no path to data disclosure (C:N), code execution, or disruption (A:N), so a real-world integrity impact of Low is more defensible than High. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept provided, so despite the 7.5 'High' headline number this is best characterized as a low-real-risk authorization defect rather than an urgent priority. The one genuinely notable signal is that exploitation is unauthenticated and trivially automatable, but because the downstream effect is merely board reordering, the practical consequence is nuisance-level tampering, not compromise. Net: patch during normal maintenance; this does not warrant emergency response. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote, unauthenticated attacker who can reach a Wekan instance's server endpoint issues a crafted update against the Boards collection setting the 'sort' field, which the vulnerable Boards.allow rule permits because it checks only that 'sort' is among the updated fields and never verifies the caller's userId or board membership. The attacker arbitrarily reorders boards for affected users. No public exploit code was provided in the intelligence, and the impact is limited to tampering with board ordering rather than reading or destroying data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Unauthenticated remote attackers can arbitrarily reorder any board in Wekan through version 18.15 by issuing a board update that includes the 'sort' field, because the server-side Boards.allow rule returned true for that field without verifying the caller's userId or board membership. The impact is confined to integrity of board ordering - board contents, membership, and other fields cannot be modified - and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. NVD scores this 7.5, while this assessment rates the integrity impact as Low given the narrow scope of what an attacker can actually change.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Wekan to 18.16 or later, the vendor-released patch that introduces the canUpdateBoardSort membership check and moves board ordering into the per-user profile.boardSortIndex mapping; the change is captured in commit ea310d7508b344512e5de0dfbc9bdfd38145c5c5 and documented in the 18.16 changelog at https://github.com/wekan/wekan/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#v816-2025-11-02-wekan--release, with reporter credit at https://wekan.fi/hall-of-fame/spacebleed/. No backport to the 18.15 line is indicated, so older deployments must upgrade. If immediate patching is not possible, compensating controls are limited because the flaw is in a server-side collection allow rule rather than a single route: the most effective stopgap is to block external access to the Meteor/DDP endpoint (the WebSocket and HTTP data routes Wekan serves for its client) behind a reverse proxy or network ACL so only trusted networks can reach it - with the trade-off that remote and mobile users must then connect through a VPN, and the public board/read-only pages that rely on the same endpoint may break. Disabling or restricting the sort/reorder UI does not help, since the vulnerable handler accepts arbitrary client-supplied collection updates rather than only those issued from the UI. Regardless of workaround, monitor server logs for anonymous board update operations carrying the 'sort' field, as those are the signature of exploitation attempts.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wekan is an open-source kanban board implemented in JavaScript on the Meteor full-stack framework, which exposes client-side collection mutations over DDP and enforces write authorization server-side through allow/deny rules. The root cause is CWE-284 (Improper Access Control): in models/boards.js the Boards.allow handler reduced the update-permission decision to a field-name check, effectively 'return _.contains(fieldNames, "sort")', so any update payload carrying the sort field was authorized regardless of who sent it. The fix commit ea310d7508b344512e5de0dfbc9bdfd38145c5c5 replaces that shortcut with a canUpdateBoardSort(userId, board, fieldNames) policy that fetches the board's members and requires the caller to be a member, adds regression tests (server/lib/tests/boards.security.tests.js) covering anonymous, non-member, and legitimate member cases, and simultaneously redesigns ordering: the server no longer sorts by the shared board 'sort' field, instead storing a per-user mapping at profile.boardSortIndex[boardId] and sorting client-side via Users.helpers.sortBoardsForUser, with a deterministic title-based fallback for public pages.

DescriptionNVD
An issue was discovered in Wekan The Open Source kanban board system up to version 18.15, fixed in 18.16. Unauthenticated attackers can update a board's "sort" value (Boards.allow returns true without verifying userId), allowing arbitrary reordering of boards.
Executive ViewAI
Wekan, an open-source kanban platform, contains a high-severity flaw through version 18.15 that lets remote attackers change the display order of any board without proper authorization. The impact is limited to board ordering integrity-board content, membership, and other fields are not affected-so the primary organizational effect is potential confusion or minor operational disruption for teams relying on Wekan. Leadership should prioritize patching because a vendor patch is available per the vendor advisory, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
Apply vendor patch.
