Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to inject script tags into the Quick Template page of Junos Space, and a second user - another operator or administrator - must subsequently visit that page for the payload to fire (UI:A / user interaction mandatory). The payload then executes with the viewing victim's permissions, so impact escalates only if an administrator views the tampered template. Practically, injecting the template content implies the attacker holds console access sufficient to create or edit a Quick Template, which limits this to users already inside the management plane rather than fully external actors despite the vendor's PR:N rating. Affects all Junos Space versions before 24.1R4; fixed in 24.1R4. No malicious or non-default networking configuration is otherwise required.

Impact

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS, CWE-79) flaw in the Junos Space Quick Template page, rated by Juniper at CVSS 4.0 base 5.1 (medium). The vendor vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity issue requiring victim interaction, with no impact to the vulnerable system itself (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N) but low confidentiality and integrity impact to a subsequent system (SC:L/SI:L) - consistent with script executing in another user's authenticated session rather than compromising the server directly. Real-world urgency signals are LOW and mutually consistent: EPSS is 0.22% (12th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC is referenced. The one factor that raises concern beyond the modest score is the privilege-escalation potential: the description states the injected script runs 'with the target's permissions, including an administrator,' so a lower-privileged user who can author a template could effectively hijack an admin session. NOTE A DISCREPANCY: the vendor vector sets PR:N (no privileges), but injecting script into a Quick Template realistically requires some authenticated access to the Junos Space management console - PR:N appears optimistic and should be verified with Juniper. Overall this is a genuine but non-urgent, interaction-dependent insider/escalation risk, not a wormable or mass-exploitable threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged Junos Space user with access to create or edit a Quick Template injects malicious script tags into the template content. When an administrator or other user later opens that Quick Template page, the stored script executes in their authenticated browser session, letting the attacker perform management actions with the victim's (potentially administrator) permissions. No public exploit code is referenced, and successful exploitation depends on the victim viewing the crafted page (UI:A).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in Juniper Networks Junos Space (all versions before 24.1R4) lets an attacker plant script tags in the Quick Template page, which then execute in the browser session of any operator or administrator who opens the tampered template, running commands with that victim's privileges. The vendor rates this CVSS 4.0 base 5.1 (medium), and our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment scores it AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - exploitation is not autonomous: it requires that the attacker already be positioned to create or edit a Quick Template and that a second, more privileged user subsequently views the page. There is no CISA KEV entry and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; EPSS is low at 0.22% (12th percentile), consistent with a targeted management-plane issue rather than an internet-scale mass-exploitation target.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade Junos Space to 24.1R4, the version in which Juniper resolved this issue (Juniper Security Advisory JSA103140, https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA103140) - vendor-released patch: 24.1R4. Because the 24.1 R1/R2/R3 builds in the affected CPE list are all below that level, plan the upgrade for every Junos Space instance regardless of which pre-24.1R4 train it currently runs. If the upgrade cannot be scheduled immediately, apply compensating controls that target the two preconditions of the attack. First, restrict who can create or edit Quick Templates and audit existing template content for injected script markup, since the payload must be stored by an authenticated user before it can fire - this narrows the set of possible injectors but does not protect administrators who later view a template that was already poisoned, so existing templates must be reviewed and cleansed, not merely locked down. Second, limit reachability of the Junos Space web UI to trusted administrative networks or a management VLAN, or front it with a reverse proxy/WAF rule set that strips script tags from template submission and rendering paths; the trade-off is reduced administrative convenience and the real possibility of false positives or bypass through encoding tricks, so this is a stopgap rather than a substitute for 24.1R4. Third, treat the advisory's interim hardening guidance as authoritative and avoid third-party access to the console: the client-side scope change (S:C) means an administrator browsing a compromised template can be made to perform privileged actions, so monitor Junos Space audit logs for unexpected administrative activity originating from template pages while the patch is pending. No vendor workaround that fully eliminates the vulnerability without the upgrade is identified in the available data.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic stored (persistent) cross-site scripting vulnerability, CWE-79, caused by improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation. Junos Space is Juniper's network management platform, and its Quick Template feature stores operator-authored template content that is later rendered back to other users in the web UI; because the stored content is not safely encoded on output, attacker-supplied markup such as script tags is persisted server-side and interpreted by the browser as executable content when the page is viewed. The CVSS 4.0 vector supplied by Juniper (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A, with scope limited to subsequent-system confidentiality and integrity, SC:L/SI:L) and the parallel CVSS 3.1 assessment (PR:L/UI:R/S:C) agree on the essential shape of the issue: network-reachable, low complexity, requiring user interaction, and with the security scope expanding from the vulnerable component to the victim's browser session, hence the S:C rating. The practical consequence of that scope change is that payload code inherits the viewing user's Junos Space session, so an operator-level template author can escalate to administrative actions if an administrator visits the injected page. The PR:N versus PR:L divergence is the main analytical caveat: the vendor's vector implies no prior privileges, while the independent assessment reasons that writing content into a Quick Template effectively presupposes authenticated console access, which is why we treat this as a management-plane, insider-adjacent risk rather than a fully unauthenticated external one. CPE data confirms the entire Junos Space line is covered - the wildcard cpe:2.3:a:juniper:junos_space entry plus discrete 24.1 R1, R2 and R3 builds - with the fix landing in 24.1R4, so no maintained release train is unaffected.

DescriptionCVE.org

An Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting') vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos Space allows an attacker to inject script tags in the Quick Template page that, when visited by another user, enables the attacker to execute commands with the target's permissions, including an administrator. This issue affects all versions of Junos Space before 24.1R4.
