| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to already hold www-data (web server) privileges on the Nagios XI host, because process_perfdata.pl is owned by and writable by www-data while being executed periodically by the nagios user. The specific prerequisite is a prior web-tier foothold (e.g. an existing web application compromise or local shell as www-data); there is no remote or unauthenticated path. Exploitation is limited to Nagios XI versions prior to 2024R2 and depends on the scheduler actually invoking the script, which occurs during normal performance-data processing. This is strictly a local privilege-escalation condition, not remotely reachable on its own. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional privilege-escalation issue, not a critical internet-facing threat. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) confirms LOCAL attack vector with low complexity and LOW privileges required - the attacker must already possess www-data (web server) privileges on the host before this flaw is useful. The score of 8.4 is driven by high confidentiality/integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H) from gaining the nagios service account, with low availability impact (VA:L). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation - this is a post-compromise escalation primitive rather than an initial-access vulnerability. The practical priority is moderate: it meaningfully worsens any existing web-tier compromise of a Nagios XI server, but it cannot be triggered by a remote unauthenticated attacker on its own. CWE-732 (incorrect permission assignment) is consistent with the description of a www-data-writable script executed as the nagios user. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already compromised the Nagios XI web application (gaining www-data execution, e.g. via a separate web vulnerability or webshell) overwrites the www-data-writable process_perfdata.pl script with malicious Perl code. When the Nagios scheduler next runs the script as the nagios user, the attacker's code executes with nagios privileges, escalating from the web tier to the monitoring service account. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Local privilege escalation in Nagios XI before 2024R2 lets an attacker who already holds web-server (www-data) privileges on the Nagios host execute arbitrary code as the nagios user. The root cause is misconfigured ownership of process_perfdata.pl, which is owned and writable by www-data yet invoked periodically by the nagios user through normal performance-data processing, so any web-tier compromise can be escalated to the monitoring service account. Exploitation is strictly local and requires a prior foothold as www-data - there is no remote or unauthenticated path - and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis (CVSS 8.4 per the vendor/NVD vector; our independent assessment rates it CVSS:3.1 7.x-class, local only).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Nagios XI 2024R2 or later, which corrects the ownership/permission configuration of process_perfdata.pl (see the changelog at https://www.nagios.com/changelog/nagios-xi/ and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/nagios-xi-privilege-escalation-via-improperly-owned-script). If an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the compensating control of removing www-data write access to the script manually: set ownership to the executing account (for example chown nagios:nagios /usr/local/nagios/libexec/process_perfdata.pl) and strip group/other write bits (chmod 755 or 644 as appropriate), verifying the nagios user can still read and execute it so performance-data processing continues. The trade-off is that some packages or upgrade routines may reset these permissions, so re-verify after any maintenance or upgrade. Additionally, audit the rest of the Nagios installation tree for other www-data-writable files that are executed by nagios or root, capture file-integrity baselines for Nagios scripts to detect future tampering, and - if a web-tier compromise is suspected - treat the host as fully compromised, rotate Nagios credentials and any secrets the nagios account can reach, and review scheduler/cron output for unexpected executions, since the escalation requires an existing www-data foothold rather than remote access.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is an instance of CWE-732 (Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource). Nagios XI's performance-data pipeline relies on the helper script process_perfdata.pl, which the Nagios scheduler/cron executes periodically under the nagios service account to ingest and process performance metrics. In affected builds the file was owned by - and therefore writable by - www-data, the user the Nagios XI web interface (Apache/PHP) runs as. Because the executing identity (nagios) differs from the owning/writable identity (www-data), a compromise of the web tier yields write access to a file that is later executed with nagios's privileges. The CVSS v4.0 vector (AV:L/PR:L, with the independently assessed v3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L) confirms this is a local, low-privilege-required escalation rather than a remotely reachable flaw: no user interaction is needed and the attacker must already possess www-data-level access on the host. The escalation is meaningful because the nagios account controls monitoring configuration and plugin execution paths, giving the attacker a materially higher-privileged position inside the Nagios deployment.

DescriptionCVE.org
Nagios XI versions prior to 2024R2 contain an improperly owned script, process_perfdata.pl, which is executed periodically as the nagios user but owned by www-data. Because the file was writable by www-data, an attacker with web server privileges could modify its contents, leading to arbitrary code execution as the nagios user when the script is next run. This improper ownership and permission configuration enables local privilege escalation.
Executive ViewAI
Nagios XI installations running releases earlier than 2024R2 contain a local privilege-escalation flaw that lets anyone who has already compromised the web tier run code as the nagios service account. The practical risk is concentrated on the monitoring host itself, but Nagios XI commonly holds credentials and reach into the wider estate, so a compromise there can translate into broad visibility and lateral movement rather than an isolated incident. No vendor patch is currently available, meaning the exposure must be contained through access hardening and monitoring until a fixed release can be deployed.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: correct ownership and write permissions on process_perfdata.pl so the www-data account cannot modify it; enforce strict least privilege and segregation so no unnecessary web-tier process runs alongside Nagios XI; network-segment and firewall the Nagios host to limit lateral movement; deploy file-integrity monitoring and alerting on changes to Nagios XI scripts and binaries; rotate credentials stored or used by the monitoring platform; and prioritize migration to a vendor-confirmed fixed release (2024R2 or later) as soon as it is available.

Attack Technique
Privilege escalation occurs when an attacker leverages flaws in access control mechanisms to gain permissions beyond what they were originally granted.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
