2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated account with at least low privileges (PR:L) sufficient to submit input to the Source Groups page percentile-calculator menu, which is where the payload is stored. Realization of impact additionally requires passive user interaction (UI:P): a second victim user must navigate to and render the affected page for the stored script to fire. Limiting factors are therefore twofold - the attacker must already be authenticated to the application, and the attack is not self-contained (it depends on a victim viewing the poisoned page). It affects Nagios Network Analyzer versions prior to 2024R1; upgrading to 2024R1 or later remediates it. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity stored XSS (CWE-79) with a vendor/VulnCheck-assigned CVSS 4.0 base score of 5.1. The vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) indicates network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation that nonetheless requires the attacker to already hold a low-privileged authenticated account and requires passive victim interaction (another user viewing the Source Groups percentile-calculator page). Impact is confined to confidentiality/integrity of a subsequent system (the victim's browser session: SC:L/SI:L) with no availability impact and no direct impact to the vulnerable server itself (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N). The EPSS score of 0.76% (54th percentile) is low-to-moderate, indicating no strong signal of imminent mass exploitation. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified, so this is a real but non-urgent issue rather than a drop-everything priority - characteristic of authenticated, interaction-dependent XSS. Note the signals are internally consistent (low EPSS, no KEV, no POC, authenticated+UI-gated vector all point to limited real-world risk); the main caveat is that the only CVSS provided is a 4.0 vector and no independent third-party CVSS 3.1 score is present for cross-validation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with a low-privileged authenticated account in Nagios Network Analyzer injects a malicious script payload into the Source Groups page (percentile calculator menu), which the application stores persistently. When a higher-privileged user or administrator later opens that page, the stored script executes in their browser, enabling session hijacking, actions performed as the victim, or theft of displayed data. No public proof-of-concept exploit code was identified at the time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in Nagios Network Analyzer versions prior to 2024R1 lets an authenticated attacker with low privileges persist a malicious script through the Source Groups page (percentile calculator menu), which then executes in the browser of any other user who views that page. The vendor/VulnCheck-assigned CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.1, and our independent assessment rates it moderate: the attacker must already hold an account able to submit input to the Source Groups percentile-calculator menu (PR:L), and impact is only realized when a second victim renders the poisoned page (UI:P), yielding low confidentiality and integrity impact within a changed scope. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is low at 0.76% (54th percentile), so prioritization should focus on hardening authenticated access rather than emergency patching.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Nagios Network Analyzer 2024R1 or later, which the vendor identifies as the fix for this issue; the change is described in the Nagios changelog at https://www.nagios.com/changelog/#network-analyzer and summarized on the product security page at https://www.nagios.com/products/security/#network-analyzer, with the original report documented at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/nagios-network-analyzer-source-groups-percentile-calculator-menu-stored-xss. Vendor-released patch: 2024R1. Because exploitation requires an authenticated account with permission to write to the Source Groups percentile-calculator menu, the most effective compensating control if you cannot upgrade immediately is to restrict and audit that permission set - limit Source Groups editing and percentile-calculator configuration to a small, trusted group of administrators, accepting the trade-off that legitimate users lose self-service reporting configuration. Deploying a Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline and untrusted script sources on the Network Analyzer console reduces stored-XSS execution but may break legitimate inline UI behavior and should be tested in a staging instance first. Review and cleanse any existing Source Groups percentile-calculator entries for injected markup before or after upgrading, since the payload is persisted and will survive the patch until the stored data is cleared or re-saved; note that doing so has no functional downside beyond requiring manual verification of saved group definitions. There is no need to block network access to the console for this moderate-severity issue provided the above access restrictions are in place, and administrators should monitor web server and application logs for suspicious stored values in the Source Groups view.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is a classic CWE-79 improper-neutralization-during-web-page-generation flaw, specifically the stored (persistent) variant. The application accepts attacker-supplied input in the Source Groups page's percentile calculator menu, stores it server-side without adequate sanitization or output encoding, and later renders it into HTML served to other users, so the injected script executes in the victim's browser origin. Because the payload is stored, exploitation does not require the victim to click a crafted link - merely navigating to the affected Source Groups view triggers execution. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:nagios:network_analyzer:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with a wildcard version confirms all Nagios Network Analyzer releases before 2024R1 are in scope; the CVSS 4.0 vector provided (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) is consistent with our CVSS 3.1 assessment of AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, i.e., network-reachable, low-complexity, authenticated, and dependent on victim interaction, with scope change and limited C/I impact and no availability impact. Note that XSS in a network-monitoring console can be leveraged to hijack sessions of administrative users, but the assessed impact here remains limited (SC:L/SI:L).

DescriptionCVE.org
Nagios Network Analyzer versions prior to 2024R1 contain a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Source Groups page (percentile calculator menu). An attacker can supply a malicious payload which is stored by the application and later rendered in the context of other users. When a victim views the affected page the injected script executes in the victim's browser context.
