LOW 2.3

Description

vyper is a Pythonic Smart Contract Language for the EVM. Vyper handles AugAssign statements by first caching the target location to avoid double evaluation. However, in the case when target is an access to a DynArray and the rhs modifies the array, the cached target will evaluate first, and the bounds check will not be re-evaluated during the write portion of the statement. This issue has been addressed in version 0.4.1 and all users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

Analysis

vyper is a Pythonic Smart Contract Language for the EVM. Rated low severity (CVSS 2.3), this vulnerability is remotely exploitable, low attack complexity. Public exploit code available and no vendor patch available.

Technical Context

This vulnerability is classified as Out-of-bounds Write (CWE-787), which allows attackers to write data beyond allocated buffer boundaries leading to code execution or crashes. vyper is a Pythonic Smart Contract Language for the EVM. Affected products include: Vyperlang Vyper. Version information: version 0.4.1.

Affected Products

Vyperlang Vyper.

Remediation

No vendor patch is available at time of analysis. Monitor vendor advisories for updates. Validate write boundaries, use memory-safe languages, enable compiler protections (ASLR, stack canaries).
