1DescriptionCVE.org
An exploitable buffer overflow exists in the Joyent SmartOS 20161110T013148Z Hyprlofs file system. The vulnerability is present in the Ioctl system call with the command HYPRLOFS_ADD_ENTRIES when dealing with 32-bit file systems. An attacker can craft an input that can cause a buffer overflow in the nm variable leading to an out of bounds memory access and could result in potential privilege escalation. This vulnerability is distinct from CVE-2016-9032.
AnalysisAI
An exploitable buffer overflow exists in the Joyent SmartOS 20161110T013148Z Hyprlofs file system. Rated high severity (CVSS 7.0). Public exploit code available and no vendor patch available.
Technical ContextAI
This vulnerability is classified as Buffer Copy without Size Check (CWE-120), which allows attackers to overflow a buffer to corrupt adjacent memory. This vulnerability is distinct from CVE-2016-9032. Affected products include: Joyent Smartos.
RemediationAI
No vendor patch is available at time of analysis. Monitor vendor advisories for updates. Always validate buffer sizes before copy operations. Use bounded functions (strncpy, snprintf). Enable compiler protections.
